What is PAD

Can anyone please explain what PAD is? This company wants me to do a $10 job that is an hour away and give me PAD. I'm not sure what that is tho. Is it like a bonus?

It is exactly like a bonus. How much more do you need them to "pad" the payment in order for you to do the shop?

aha! in those terms, it makes a lot of sense. Why not just write bonus though? lol.. I am more inclined to take a job with the word BONUS.. it just sounds more appealing. lol
Every company has their own preferred terminology....

gotcha. Thanks!!
One more question. How do you nicely reply to these schedulers and tell them " no, that job is a waste of my time and offering me $12 for an hour drive each way plus the job itself and report is insulting"?
PAD = Pre-authorized distance pay. If the PAD amount that is listed is not acceptable, you request additional PAD. Maybe it will be authorized. Or, maybe not.

No need to mention that the job and report are insultingwinking smiley

LOL! I know exactly what you mean.

However, there is NO polite way to say that.

If you would consider doing the job for $40, merely reply "I would be interested in this job at $40", and leave it at that.
When I get such offers, I force myself to remember that the scheduler might not have any idea how far the location is from me as s/he has many, many shops and shoppers to schedule and does not have the time to map all of them out. Plus, for all the scheduler knows, you could already be headed in that direction.... I avoid any negative comments on the actual offer and say something like this, "That location is quite a drive. I would be happy to take care of it for $120." If they respond, questioning my offer, I'll explain further, "I don't have any other work in Never Never Land and the drive alone will burn $20 in gas and I could pick up several $12 shops near home in the time I would be driving to and from this location."

I have found that, when the shop really needs to be filled, such an approach can be successful. I did three $6 gasoline shops last week for $518 last week using this approach. They were little 10 minute shops that took nine hours of driving.

Talk to your tax professional before assuming that PAD is treated the same as a bonus by the IRS. Miles that you have already been paid for are generally not deductible on your taxes.

The trick with PAD is to ask if there are any other shops in the area. That way, you can set up a nice route. It's well worth your while then.
