If you got a check in the mail from a company when you did not complete an online application on their website and provide your tax information and you did not complete any work for them, it's definitely a SCAM. Mystery shopping companies do not pay in advance and they definitely do not send checks to strangers. Further, without getting your information for tax purposes, how could a company legally pay you? Many scammers use the names of legitimate companies. Nuff said..
@roflwofl is correct: The check you received is part of a scam. The good news is that you are in the best place to learn about real mystery shopping.

There is a “New Shoppers” area on this forum. Read the pinned information. There is a huge list of companies linked at the bottom of this page that will get you connected with real mystery shopping companies (MSC’s). Start with the “15 Most Discussed.” Read the forum - a lot of wisdom is shared here.

GapBuster is itself a legitimate company. But the check you got is fake and was issued by scammers who are impersonating GapBuster. Assuming that you got the check and related material in the mail, I suggest reporting everything to the US Postal Inspectors and to the police. Also send an email to the real GapBuster so that they know that the scammers are at it again,

Definitely a SCAM. Do NOT deposit that check or send any money or merchandise to anyone based on their instructions !!!
