It is indeed a tidy sum, and i signed up. But look at carefully at the requirements. The bonus for checking requires a direct deposit every month and the bonus for savings requires that $15,000 be put in the account within a month and the $15,000 balance needs to be maintained for a minimum of 90 days. I thought that all I had to do was qualify for a free account, but the devil was in the details. I am going to collect on the checking account since I switched a monthly direct deposit. The bonus (including the double-dip bonus) for savings is $300 in my area, which is 2% of the balance. IF you happen to have $15,000 invested somewhere (or masquerading as hamburger patties in your freezer) and you can move it AND the current investment is earning less than 2%, then you will net the difference. Also to note is that the bonus is subject to income tax.

The Chase branches in the DMV area are so new that they probably are not yet being shopped. Chase is offering a large cash bonus to their long time credit card holders to open both checking and savings accounts for at least 90 days. I am going to do that, as I qualify and it is a tidy sum.
