Alcohol required - Don't drink

And the server stands there waiting for you to take a sip like any normal person would ....

I'm with SCM. There's no way you could get away without taking sip on a fine dining assignment if you ordered a bottle and checked the cork....and I don't even want to touch that comment about darker color being related to aging. A main component of being a shopper is to be a 'normal' customer. Normal customers who order wine, drink wine.

If it makes you non-drinker feel any better, I have a lot of frustration with shops that don't allow alcohol. Pizza with no beer! What's the point of it?

Do you taste and swallow? If not, I would argue you are not meeting the requirements of the shop. Again, this is where we have a big group on both sides of a disagreement. This is like me taking a pretend bite of a 5 guys burger. It does not meet the shop requirements.

I don't like beer either so I do not take shops that require I drink a beer...but if they require a margarita, sign me up. I guess my high end restaurants have never been high end enough to require or even allow a bottle so no cork sniffing for me. I have had a spend up to $175 but still they wanted me to order wine by the glass. I really wished I could take a Brazilian BBQ shop when it was available a few years ago but alas, I am not fond of red meat...so I passed on that thinking I would not look like a regular customer eating just one taste of meat and attacking the salad bar. I felt terrible missing it every month when I saw that job listing. My husband would have really enjoyed the shop but I gritted my teeth and passed it up. We probably all have shops we wish we could do only if the rules did not say xyz.
I suggest that you look at the menus for the Brazilian restaurant. I have been to ones in the US, Brazil, and Singapore and each time they served chicken and pork. Sometimes they serve fish such as salmon (my favorite). You may be able to make your husband happy while you avoid red meat. I may regret telling you this, because there is a really good Brazilian steakhouse chain available now.

No evidently I am not signed up with whatever msc it is and I am not asking!! My favorite meal is salad. My daughter who does eat all the meats and fish and poultry told me she really messed up when she went to one and ate so much of the first course...salads etc she could not really get her money's worth on the meat courses. But of course if the msc is picking up the tab in exchange for my report I would not mind so much spending $60+ for each person and eating mostly salad bar.
I look at alcohol and people in a similar manner. I try to find something in each one that I like, and I generally succeed.
I turned down two pretty simple dinner assignments over the past couple of days that reimbursed generously but would not allow me and my guest to have even one single glass of wine, beer, or alcoholic beverage.

I am with you both, if I can't enjoy an adult beverage with my dinner, I am basically not interested. Don't they know it's good for our hearts?? smiling smiley

The items on the salad bar at the high end Brazilian Steakhouse are extremely tempting! [Not all Brazilian steakhouses are created equal.] They sell the salad bar plus one meat or fish, and charge $37 and I'd say that it is worth it. There is one chain we went to using a Groupon coupon (still far from inexpensive), and it was disappointing after the high end one. We decided that we need a strategy when we visit the high end one. Either buy the salad bar option, or eat minimally at the salad bar, and focus on the meat courses.

Oh for sure, but posting drunk hasn't always worked out well for me. Everything in moderation, LOL!
Yeah, I can't imagine. I love the stuff, though I focus more on wine these days. I used to brew my own beer in college. I worked at a restaurant in my 20s that had an "Around the World Club" where the goal was to drink 50 different kinds of imported beers within 6 weeks. I did it in 3 weeks quite easily, most of them being free shift drinks we were given after work.

Jewelbeth - each assignment has different reasons for ordering alcohol. If you see one that interests you, just email the scheduler. "Is it okay if I order a Virgin Caesar or Virgin Dacquiri for the drink requirement?" Some shops allow this. Just ask each one. Not all shops evaluate the taste of the drink, often it is just the speed of service from the bar.

Always take the high road.
After catching up on this thread, I think I need a beer. It's five o'clock somewhere, isn't it?

Hard work builds character and homework is good for your soul.
My thing is I love a nice well made Cosmo before dinner, but they usually allow a house drink...just can't win.
I tried a light beer at BJ's the other night, and it wasn't so bad and only four bucks at happy hour throughout the restaurant, not only in the bar...wasn't a bar audit.

Live consciously....
It might be 5:49.

I went to Epcot and ordered a drink from every country- I almost puked during every beer drink. Luickly, I had a beer drinker with me.

This is my favorite method, even when sitting at a busy bar.

If you sip, you taste, whether or not you swallow. There, requirement is satisfied.

Can you describe the finish if you don't swallow? Again, I know a bunch of us don't agree on this, I just think certain things can only be described if you actually taste and swallow the drink. God Bless!

Taste buds are on the tongue, not the throat or stomach. Most cocktails are served with a straw that you cannot see through, so the liquid returns to the glass after the sip and taste.

Of course there are some alcohol shops that I simply cannot do at all, because they require drinking more than one complete drink. How could I possibly be alert enough to properly complete the shop after consuming that much alcohol? If I am not driving afterward, such as a hotel shop, I will drink half the glass to check for the check back, but I do not drink at all whenever possible. I do many nightclub and bartender integrity shops where there is no focus on the taste of the drink.

I saw on TV (don't know if it's true) that beer would actually taste sweet, except that they put hops in it to make it bitter. So beer is an acquired taste for most people. Why would I want to force myself to acquire a taste for something that has no nutritional benefit?
AZ...there are carbs in beer. If you had nothing else to eat, beer could sustain you for a short while. And beer has food value, but food has no beer value. Also, it's not true that all beer would be sweet without hops. I used to brew my own beer and I know this to not be true.
Obviously, you can add anything you want to your own brew, even bacon if you like, but I was referring to commercial beer
Yes. I have had many, many, many commercial beers in the last three decades. I am pretty certain that it's not true that beer would be sweet without hops.

I like bacon (which has good food value), but not in my beer.
I gotta write that down, it's too good to risk forgetting.

@JASFLALMT wrote:

I brew to this day and have brewed for a very long time. The sugar in wort (measured as original gravity) is what the yeast "eats" to make alcohol. Basically, there is not a lot of sweet in beer because it was converted into the alcohol. It has nothing to do with the hops, they are bittering agents, but have nothing to do with cutting sweetness. Also, many styles of beer have almost not hops at all, but have different flavors imparted by the yeast itself or adjuncts added to the beer. If you really want to know how it works, there are some great articles, and videos and how the science works.
