Bank Card shop at Department Store

I'm perplexed on guidelines for a shop at a major retailer where I'm to see if I am offered an application for a bankcard (Citicorp). I am NOT required to purchase anything. I must select item (over $100) and have an interaction with both a sales associate AND a cashier to see if the card is offered to me. I'm trying to figure out how I would interact with the cashier if I'm not planning on making a purchase. Any ideas on how you would handle this scenario is appreciatedsmiling smiley

With the sales person you find a pricey item and live it but (whatever the objection). At the cashier you start the transaction and then decide you don’t want to spend that much (this is a loose translation) but it’s really easy and I love these shops. There used to be so many more of them.

I always take my purchase up and then "realize" that I left my credit card in my other purse that I took with me to a function over the weekend. They usually offer to hold my item for me and then I leave. In the alternative, if I have been shopping and have bags with me, I "panic" that I forgot it at the previous store and then leave quickly. I've just done two in the last three days and the cashier wasn't even fazed!
