There are so many shops that never get done in the rural areas. I watch from Indianapolis, Ohio, KY, TN and GA (even Atlanta). There are also lots of shops in NC and SC. These rural shops can be heavily bonused, depending upon when they were promised to the client. Keep in mind that when you go anywhere midwest, south, south-east - you are in farm communities -so there are tractors and animals on the two lane roads you have to travel. Also no cell signal. Oh - and another thing to keep in mind that schedulers will use the zip code you are staying in and the zip where the shop is. In rural areas a zip code could be a very large area. I had one scheduler call and ask me to do a shop that was "35 miles" from me, with no bonus. When I googled my address to the shop address it was almost 85 miles, one way. I declined the $12 pay. LOL. I also just got an email from a MSC today for shops that were "close to my home". Only 200 miles one way for a gas audit. Yeh, I want to drive 400 miles round trip for a $12.50 shop. ROFL.

What's even better is the MSCs who use area code instead of zip code. The entire state of Alaska is on one area code. Here in the Florida keys, the entire 126 mile stretch of islands as well as the mainland through Miami. I get a bunch of emails/calls for shops in the upper keys or Miami with no PAD because they're "in my shopping area" even though Miami is 150 miles and takes 4 hours one way with normal traffic.

True that! I know they are at home and have no idea the significant mileage - especially if they live in the city and a zip code is just a few blocks or an area code is a a 20 minute drive. I got a bit frustrated with all the text messages for these types of shops that require hundreds of miles for a shop that has a "generous bonus" added making the shop a $10.00 shop. I went through and opted out of all text messages. This is not a full time thing for me and getting texts messages all hours of the day and into the night (due to time zone differences) ...just to much for me! I love my relax time and my beauty sleep without interruption.

We all get offers that are insanely low based on the distance. The question is: Do you counter with the amount for which you will do the shop? For instance, "I know that it's only 35 miles as the crow flies, but its actually a two hour drive each way. I'd happily do the shop for $200."

Recently I talked with a scheduler who insisted the shop was 70 miles away, that all I had to do was go "straight North on Hwy 27". I told her "Hwy 27" is an unpaved road that ENDS 20 miles north of me. "But it's on Google Maps!"

Well, Google Maps is WRONG.

There's only one road to get to the shop, and it's almost 200 miles away. West 45 miles, north 75 miles, east 70 miles.

No incentive -- it's a $35 shop.

LOL!!!

She didn't think it was funny when I told her it was moot -- I wouldn't go even the 70 miles one way for $35.

Hey, ceasesmith, Happy morning! I hope you were not planning to shop near me today. All roads are closed, and points beyond experienced the same blizzard that socked us in here. Stay safe and dry and live to shop another day. (apologizes to.. someone)

Boy, we are socked in! Google maps currently shows a 6 hour detour to get to the town 15 miles west of me.

The joke's on Google maps, because the route they mapped -- all those roads are closed, too!!!

Frankly, I'm just thankful that we didn't lose power and/or heat!
