Not being crafty, I buy gifts for my daughter, however spend time picking out the right card and we always write how we feel or something funny, but always personal. I have shoe boxes of kept cards that I treasure, and when missing her, look at them. Favorite Mother's Day cards are on a table in my bedroom and make me smile. Upon her last visit she gave me a teeny tiny heart (for no reason) that say's "love you Mom". I know I'm a sentimental fool.
