I did them for several years. What do you want to know?

I would like to know more, also, Wales. Are the open slots still as rare as they used to be?
First, the client requires that the shopper live withing about an hour of one of a handful of their stations becasue the they want their observations to begin and end at those key locations. NO exceptions. I have not done one in about 2 years, primarily because I tend to book up my schedule so far in advance that it became difficult for me to do them on 48-72 hours notice.

Most that I saw on the NE corridor routes were out-and-back in one day, with about 2 hours at the layover. But, I did do a nice long route between DC and Jacksonville, with sleeper accommodation.

They can afford to be picky because they only use a core group of about 12-15 shoppers, nationwide. They train those shoppers and have very low tolerance for missed items. (For instance, every time an attendant entered and departed your coach car; uniform details down to the color of everything except sox; detailed observations and timings of snack car or dining car transaction for the shopper and up to 5 other customers; detailed accounts of exactly where the cash went in food and ticket transactions; and some integrity testing for conductor actions regarding lost tickets.) If you really like train travel, you will enjoy these. Compensation is by the hour, paying only for time ON the train.

I think they've gotten more flexible since I started doing them 4ish years ago. I've been able to get dates further out than initially proposed. The best audit I did for them also involved the sleeper car, though it wasn't an overnight in the train. I got to stay the night at my destination, do some touristy stuff the next morning, then head back home. I've also had turnarounds that were as fast as 40 minutes.

I think they're fun, if a bit exhausting. I'd say they're no more difficult than a mid-level hotel, and they pay better. The report isn't terrible either, just tedious. I could bang it out pretty fast or even on the return if I focused, but I don't focus.

So true. My overnight trip also included a hotel stay but I arrived there at 6 AM, stayed overnight and then caught a return train at 11 PM. Hotel, meals and ground transport all covered. On any trip, the layover makes it easy to complete the first trip report at that stop and have only part or all of the second one to do at the end. NE Corridor trains, and most others have decent Internet. BUT, the line south from DC to Florida had not yet gotten ANY Internet when I did that particular trip.

Amtrak on the west coast is gross. There’s no reason to use it if you have a car or can fly. East coast is different.
The West Coast long haul trains, with sleepers, are very nice, as are most of the long haul trains. But, when it comes to shorter routes, it is true that the East coast, specifically the NE Corridor (Richmond to Boston, basically) has the best rail experience for short trips. Long haul in coach class can be rough since there will be a lot of families with small children. I have met many military spouses over the years who have moved the family from coast to coast via Amtrak, while the other parent was deployed. If you think that sort of thing is hard on the other coach passengers, try to imagine what a solo parent goes through on a 3+ day journey in coach.

When I was in my 20s I worked for a market research company that had the Amtrack/Caltrans, Amtrak West, and Amtrak/WSDOT contract and my job was to ride the San Joaquin, San Diegan, and Capital Corridor routes in CA, Coast Starlight (Seattle to LA) and Pacific NW trains - distributing surveys and picking them up... it was one of my favorite jobs! When we road the Coast Starlight we got sleeper cars and it was a fun trip.

The San Joaquin was a big gross... we used to call it the prison run since many towns on that route have prisons and when inmates were released they were often given a one-way Amtrak ticket...
