OMG My Clerk was Just Arrested!

So this just happened. The clerk at a gas station I shop every month just got arrested for allegedly stealing the $1,000 she was supposed to load the ATM with and misplacing the ATM log books. This was the NICEST clerk! Certainly one of the top 5 in the chain that I shop. I hope it’s a mistake and she’s not guilty.

Have you ever shopped someone and then seen their name in the paper or on the news?

Perhaps I am dumb but how on Earth are these things crimes?

But that's not at all what the OP said......

What are you up in for?
Armed robbery, you?
Oh I lost some paperwork.

LOL.

I think it was inferred that money was missing since the ATM was not filled and the log books were "misplaced". If the ATM was not filled, where did the money go?

You are getting senile in your old age, repeating yourself. I realize that is not what the OP said. I read their post. BUT it was inferred.
Actually you inferred it. I did not infer it as the post sounded more like one of the clerk's duties was to take money from somewhere and put it in the ATM and she did not do any of that task and so she got arrested.

If this is the same clerk, money was missing... (Mirabito, NY)

So it was a horribly worded headline as opposed to being a horribly worded post.......

So several years ago I was in Tulsa on a route and I picked up a sales shop at a car dealership there. During the discussion we were talking about moving away from home and he said something about having moved away because of something that had happened and recently moved back. I don't remember his exact words but it, along with another comment or two struck me as odd. Like there was something more going on. So I googled him.

Now, you may or may not know that Tulsa is home to Oral Roberts University. Several years ago Oral's son or grandson was running the university and there was some questions of embezzlement or something and basically it was just being very poorly run. The founder of Hobby Lobby threw a bunch of money in the University but the son had to resign and I think the family all got booted. There were some criminal investigations and a bunch of other crap. In amongst all of that there ended up being a trail where the wife was accused of having an affair with the 16 year old boyfriend of their daughter.

He was the salesman.

Seriously, nobody cares that you're offended.
Why on earth would a gas station clerk be entrusted with ATM duties!

A bank shop that I frequently shopped, had an armed robbery with a shopper (not me) in the bank at the time!
I took the first post right away as some kind of "shenanigans" on the clerk's part. It looked like a coverup to me from the get-go! tongue sticking out smiley How do you misplace the ATM logs? If you are doing something nefarious with the money and then the logs are conveniently "missing." smiling smiley
I am confused as well. Or naive. I assumed employees in armored trucks filled the ATM machines. And that these employees are packing heat. Certainly not a function performed in-house. Although I've been to gas stations where I would not be surprised if there was a shotgun under the counter.
At the corner store in my neighborhood, the owner of the store, owns the ATM and locks the door to the store when he opens the ATM. I've been in the store (he knows me) when he did it. So, I assume if the gas station owner owned the ATM, he would load it etc. Maybe he turned the duties over to a "trusted" employee.

I knew a real nice fellow. A head teller at the bank. He was in charge of counting the money when it arrived on the armored truck. One week the shipment was short $20.00. He reported the discrepancy. No big deal. A few weeks later, he got another shipment. He reported $20.00 short again. He got 5 years in prison.

The first week the bank had intentionally shorted the shipment. The second time they didn't. They had videotape of the cash being counted, sealed in a bag, the camera followed the bag into the truck and stayed rolling until the truck arrived at the branch. The cameras on the bank branch recorded the driver unloading the bag, walking into the branch, and handing it off to the teller.

A real nice guy. College educated. Young wife. Young kids. Bank embezzlement. At least it was federal time.

I hope that $20 was the tip of the iceberg. I hope he was skimming from somewhere else in the bank that led to 5 years in federal prison.

It's not hard to believe that someone is serving prison time over $20 if the bank pursued the case. Most financial crimes never make it to court because there simply aren't enough people to handle a case for every single one. It usually comes down to whether the victim wants to report it and press charges. If the victim wasn't someone who suffered a huge loss, the DA may not pursue the case.

I think a scam artist (think similar to Bernie Madoff) stole $100 Million and he got 5 years. tongue sticking out smiley
Punishment is often more severe at lower levels.

No one gets 5 years for $20. He was probably already on probation with terms of "commit no more crimes" or serving a suspended sentence for something else and had to serve the original sentence for the other crime.
OP here. Thank you for calling me out on a fuzzily worded, even vague, OP. I've edited it for clarity. Apparently, my brain was moving faster than my fingers were typing! This gas station chain maintains its own ATMs (no deliveries by armored cars) and the senior clerk is responsible for loading the ATM and maintaining the logbooks. In an update to the story, the "missing" logbooks turned out to be "altered" log books" when found. The clerk was arrested for grand larceny.
Ha after MFJ posted a link to the article I realized you simply parroted what you had read. I good journalist would have written a mich better headline!
