BP: high standards??

A number of gas stations have lost their contracts with BP since I shopped them last... is this a common occurrence? Is BP really that strict?

Yes. BP is the worst.
I was at a Shell last week. The owner told me he was threatened by Shell that if his mystery shop numbers weren't up to speed they would dump him.
My visit was a debrand. He had no idea. The place wasn't THAT bad but Shell has high standards.

Wow, that's a horrible way to find out that you're being debranded

He was super nice, though some of that was probably in how I chose to handle it. I even gave him a ride a few miles down the road to go watch his son in a road race or something.

This has happened to many BPs by my home (at a small city in the Midwest and a large city in the South). In the Midwest, another company swooped in and took over those BPs. In the South, the old BPs have just closed.
Here, it’s Amera, which, from the looks of it, could probably use a mystery shopping program.
Since the start of the year, seven BP's that were part of my old route with the old MSC are no longer with BP. One was demolished (as it should've been). Five of the other six, rebranded into a brand I can still shop with the old MSC.

A majority of debrands are because their contract ran out with the old brand and a different brand either gave them a better deal or they switched for some other reason. A minority of them are because the brand dumped them, although that does happen frequently.

When Deepwater Horizon happened BP sold almost all of their gulf states stations to Marathon. Because nobody in the gulf was gonna buy gas from them (and many still won't). A lot of those stations had contracts expire in the past 3 years and I've seen a large percentage of them rebrand as BP again.

Here in NJ many stations are switching from other brands to BP. You blink your eyes one day and everything is changed. Amazing how quickly they can change out all the signs, canopy, fascia, pumps etc.

BP seems to be a real bear to work with for the mystery shopping company, as well... I'm noticing much less leeway this time around regarding errors on the survey. (Plus, lower reimbursement, argh!)
