Car shop with appraisal

No. I will never do a car shop where they require me to pretend I want to trade in my vehicle (unless it paid $100 or more). I did that once for a shop that only paid $65. I learned my lesson.
I have not and will never do a car shop. Gas, oil change, included.
I will do them if I have no other shops planned for that day or if it's near a cell phone/appliance or WaWa shop (quick reports).

If you do a car shop that requires an appraisal always always always always use a cheap backup key that you don't mind leaving and DO NOT GIVE THEM YOUR KEYRING.

I had to threaten to call 911 and report my car stolen once. I had my phone out and had dialed the 911 and he stopped me before I hit call and STILL tried to talk to me before getting them.

I do them only for a local MSC here that shops a local "no haggle dealer." With appraisal and test drive I have been in and out in from 30 to 50 minutes. Short, easy report. Any other such shop, not for less than at least $110. NO ONE gets anything but my spare key, ever. Not for parking valet and not for car appraisal.

Not only are car shops a huge time eater, but then they keep calling, and sending post cards, and (I'm sure of it) selling my info to junkmailers. No, I'd rather poke my eye out....
Good tips that I never would have thought of. Thanks! I’ve done a lot of car shops, but none required an appraisal.
In the days before cell phones, I was at a car dealer. They took my keys for the appraisal, and basically wouldn't give them back. I calmly asked if I could use the phone. "Of course," the salesperson said. I called 911 and reported that I had been kidnapped, explaining that I was being held against my will. My keys promptly reappeared.

I put in a True Car inquiry to the local Mercedes dealer. In a week, they sent me about fifteen emails. I didn't respond to a single one. I used my husband's last name. I went there yesterday (not for a shop), used my legal name, had an actual question, and they won't reply back. Then the sales guy told me he was going away. End of communication. They had a car i wanted. I won't do business with them. There's no logic.
I despise the two MBZ dealers I've bought from over the years. Sure the sale is pretty awesome, but man.....try to get your scheduled maintenance, or warranty work done and then it's like pulling teeth.
I'm heavily considering skipping MB and going with Carmax and getting their warranty. The MB will break, and apparently the Carmax warranty is decent.
Funny thing, I shopped MB. The salesman lied to me about the warranty. It seems like they will tell you whatever lies they can to sell you a car.

Outside of a few bad actors: The appraisal should be started as soon as possible upon arrival. Then the sales person can can discover what your replacement plans are. By the time you are finished with whatever else is required, the appraisal should be completed.
This is more time efficient for both you and the sales associate.
