Creepy Storage guy and closed 405 Freeway, I give up today

I am giving up today and hiding in bed. My day started with the 405 freeway closure in all directions (if you don't know LA, that's really bad) When I made it to my storage shop the place was tucked away with inaccurate GPS directions. The very small office was completely out of view with the entrance after the security gate. So I press the buzzer and creepy guy not in uniform wearing a ripped T-shirt and shorts comes out irritated asking what I want. I did the shop and the guy didn't hit any of the marks or show me a storage unit. I had to observe the bathroom but didn't see one and was afraid to go in even if it was there.

I've done these shops for years and never felt concerned for my safety as I did today. I'm still not completely sure the guy was an employee. The scheduler canceled the job and put it back on the board with a $10 bonus for some other poor shopper. I tried to drive home only to find the 405/710 still closed as well as 3 lanes of the 91 freeway. 3 hours work 0 pay. At least the scheduler canceled the job before I wrote the report.

Funny, this should be big news around Los Angeles. I just googled road closures and aside from the closures 2 years ago they only list a few on or off ramps and other closures that re open at 5 AM. Glad I stayed at home today and missed all the excitement you found! wwin today is a loss. Tomorrow will be a wwiiiin for you. Where on the 405 was the closure?
google is pretty useless for up to date information many times.
Right by the 710 interchanges if it was north of the 110 or 105 it would have made more LA news I'm sure. It was technically Long Beach, a place many LA people would never venture to. [ktla.com]
The 405 closed completely? That is a first.

If you turn on Google Maps, it will divert you from traffic nightmares.

Every street is a nightmare when the freeway is closed. You cannot divert 5 to 6 lanes of traffic onto even big city streets and not have a nightmare. I was mainly interested in the news of why not the current road closures. Guess I need to watch the nightly news. In my neighborhood they put Venice blvd on a "traffic diet" for 2 blocks. They pared it down from 3 lanes to 2 for only 2 blocks and every little sidestreet became a thoroughfare. The idea for this traffic diet is not supported by any of the residents I know. They are trying to get people to use public transport where there is none and to use bikes instead of cars. All good and well for healthy people only buying a few groceries or who have showers at their office 10 miles away.
Thanks for the encouragement. Tomorrow I'm sure will be better. All roads are back open and as an amazing bonus, I read everyone survived the crash.
Why would the scheduler post the shop again? Wouldn't the client want to know these things?

Wwin...yes, I hear you, that is the exact reason I stopped shopping, having to take the 405 too unpredictable.
When I worked for NSS and traffic was less, I made it worth my while, no longer are those shops available, plus,
no one is paying enough to venture out for a three hour drive, ten dollar bonus isn't enough. Unless you live here NOW, cannot believe the traffic, but Sandy, Steve, myself and now Wwin know the hassle and turnoff. Naturally
they'll repost job, some newbie will take it.

Live consciously....
I don't know what is worse - the 405 or the 5 - both are nightmares. I have lived in So. Cal my whole life and the traffic rarely lets up anymore. Sometimes I feel it is making me a shut-in since I cannot bear the horrible traffic.
@teriraia.....I live off the five and one lane has been closed all year, used to take me 20 minutes to get to Encino, now I only do jobs in my town, just doesn't pay anymore (regardless of what the others say). My town is growing so much with many working over in L.A. adding to the problem. I have to take both the 5 and 405, no wonder I complain and with no bonus's, well.....Schools are good here, so that speaks for itself. City is growing, more value for your money.
Added: the new business is renting bikes at various locations like the library, trying to get more to bike ride and ditch their cars, great idea with our warm weather....we also have Paseo's for walking, enclosed bridges going to the mall over the highways, funny thing, we have tons of parking and no meters in the whole town....go figure.

Yeah Irene, I feel you. I live in San Diego but grew up in the San Fernando Valley and am staying in Studio City right now housesitting for a friend. It took me 35 minutes just to get to Burbank yesterday and the smount of honking and rude drivers is just insane.

OK, what am I missing?
Why was the job cancelled?
Why was this a good thing?
Didn't you complete the job?

A Dad shopping the Ark-LA-Tex and beyond.

They didn't explain why it was canceled but I assume it was because of the missed bathroom (also I didn't mention this for simplification but I couldn't get someone to answer the pre phone call I made repeatedly. Making the call was required but their answering was not). It wasn't a good thing to lose the $ but at least I didn't write the report only to have the job rejected. To be fair, I didn't complete the job as required. In hindsight, I'm OK with walking out alive unharmed and not getting paid. Chances are, the creepy guy was an employee and it would have been OK. However, it was an unsafe situation, At at my age, I've seen chances not work out so well for others around me and would prefer to be alive and safe.
Left Woodland Hills ( San Fernando Valley ) 10 yrs ago, moved to San Fran Bay area. Don't miss the traffic, but do miss the beautiful weather, friendly people and access.
AMORASMOM, I left Bay Area 30+ years ago. I do miss the golden hills, rainstorms that last for days and frozen windshields on rare extra cold winter mornings. Things I never get here by the beach in So. Cal.
Irene, about a year or two ago, time goes by fast, Massachusetts started the bike rentals, they were everywhere, libraries, bus stops, beaches, etc. Didn't work out, people were leaving them everywhere they felt like it. Some were stolen (of course), others thrown in ponds, just a nightmare. This was a Japanese company, good intentions, used an app, paid with your cell app, to unlock the bike. The bikes became a menace!

I was born in San Francisco, have been in L.A. since 1970 and still miss the beauty of the city, the weather no, the rain, no, but the feel and sophistication of the city, yes, although it has changed and not for the better....the prices are crazy. I loved Marin County.

That's too bad, seemed like a good idea.

I have to wonder if he was really an employee? He had a ripped shirt and he did not even show you the storage unit? Did he have a name tag on? I wonder if the real manager was in the back? smiling smiley

After 911 it was common to be stuck on the 405 for 2 hours while police investigated a pipe bomb sighting.

The problem with Santa Clarita is every city council person gets into office with the promise of zero growth. As soon as they're in office they switch to allowing Developers to put up as many homes as possible. The weather was great but I'm glad I left.
Just noticed they gave me a Citation for the shop also. I guess it's not surprising from JM Ridgway.

Newhall Land and Development is really responsible for the growth, they own all the land and make a profit for everything that's built. I like it here, but not the summers, definitely a cold weather girl and also not much to do in the evening.....city life is more to my liking.
This is a community for families, but love how easy it is to get around and "park", and safe.

Does NL&D own the Warner Ranch property on the South side of Sierra Hwy? I may have tbe street wrong, it's been a long time. Its tje property where all the westerns from the 50s/60s were filmed as well as Dr Quinn Medicine Woman.
Tied up, you mean? That crossed my mind too.

Long Beach isn't too bad, it's the area between the 110 and the 710 just north of Long Beach that keeps me on my toes.
SoCalMama, It's what we in LB hear the rest of LA county says about us. I agree North LB along with some other areas can be rough. I don't mean to talk down about the community, plenty of nice areas like Naples Island, Virginia Country Club, etc. Thanks for standing up for us!
