Jiffy Lube Technical Shops

Has anybody done these before? I just signed up for one and would like to hear some other shoppers experiences. The shop involves finding an ASE mechanic who's willing to take part. How did you find a mechanic?

I have a private, local garage, and the mechanic is ASE certified. I could go there, but I consider it a waste of his time. Even though he would get paid, I am using up valuable time. That is the type of place you would need to identify.

Ironically, the first 2 shops I ever did were these very shops in 2008. It's nice to see JL brought them back. They paid well but pay even better now, but there are none in my area yet. I have a small ASE certified shop less than a mile from my home. I think he always got a kick of setting up the car for me. He did not take long to do it, and I completed the setup, the mystery shop visit to JL, the trip back to the ASE shop to "unset" the car if necessary and get his report, and the wrote my report and submitted all in the same day. I don't know why the MSC mentions it taking more than one day now.

I don't want to approach the shop I normally use because it's very busy and I feel like I'm wasting their time. I also don't want them to start wondering if I'm "spying" on them if that makes any sense. Also, the MSC only reimburses $60 an hour for labor and all the shops in my area charge $80-$100 an hour. I'm going to have to approach a shop I don't already have a relationship with and explain/sell this to them. The pay is good but I'm having difficulty coming up with my sales pitch haha.

I did one years ago and had problems with my vehicle afterwards. I don't have that van anymore. I won't do one with current vehicle.

What kind of problems?

I completed six of this type shops in 2007 for Trendsource; the pay was $65 per job. The mechanic, who accompanied me to the location, actually interacted with the independent garage, and I merely submitted a short report. How sweet it was!

Bob's reply--I was not involved with the hiring; it was Trendsource. It was during that period when they also paid $45 for a group session on Medicare gap products, $21 for business verification assignments and occasionally a PAD of $20 for grocery shops. They seem to have only become super tight with fees when they realized there were shoppers willing/needing to toil for a pittance.

That's the direction the industry is going. Leaves a bad taste in my mouth when I talk to the schedulers who act irritated when I won't accept an assignment for a pittance. Glad I won't be reliant on this for much longer.
