Shopping car dealers

So, this happened. I visited a car dealer recently. I used a new email address. I received a follow up email using an email address that I did not give this person. I had used this email address at another location, which was not part of the same dealership, but was the same car brand. Also, I did not give the sales person my license when he wanted to copy my address.

If I shopped a dealership 80 miles away, but the brand was the same, would my information be in the system? He read off a phone number and asked if it was mine. I said that it was not. We did talk in passing about where I lived and I did tell him the town. I did shop another car brand under the same deslership for a different MSC. I do not know if I used my married or maiden name though, or what email address.

You would think they would delete mystery shopper information from their system. He knew I was a mystery shopper. I even took a different car.

I don't understand how they expect us to conduct these shops if you are listed in the system as a shopper if you visit once.

That is a huge problem with shopping car dealerships. So many are part of a big chain, and they mark us as shoppers. Also, service departments of a certain brand may share computer systems so they can track repairs.
There are some very large dealership ownership like the Penske Group (and there are others) that own dealers all around the country. Unless you look carefully, you may not know who is under the same ownership. If you submitted an inquiry n an auto brand website (such as Porsche), I would not be surprised if the information you provide is shared broadly. Also, if you have ever used a car buying service (Consumer Reports, Costco, Sam's Club, a credit union consortium), the information is shared.

I didn't submit an online inquiry. I didn't even give this dealer my license, just a new email address. Then, he emailed me back with another address. I want to ask him where he got that email, but I don't want to get in trouble with the MSC.

I went to the opt out link and it had my name, phone number, and address. I gave him none of this information.

Probably part of the same ownership group.

Generally repairs are only tracked by VIN and normally only warranty repair work.

You could be merchandiser at dealerships. This is much less fussy than the sales shops.

After my dealership disappeared, I used to have my car serviced at Midas. They had records of my every visit that were visible to any location.
