Who decides when a Topic is closed

I was really into the should we rate the MSC's and was going to comment but alas it has been closed after two days. And the "where are you shopping tomorrow" has been open so long that it has at least 120 pages in it with 3582 posts in it as of this moment.

And it is a current hot topic that has been closed so what gives?

The one that was closed was needing more and more moderator attention due to name calling. I suspect that someone, a mod or even a forum member, asked Jacob to take a look at it. If Jacob or the mods think that one of the posters (or more) is really looking for a fight, a thread is likely to get closed. It has never had anything to do with the longevity of a thread that simmers along without disruptive comments.

As a side note, threads can be "broken" if they get long enough, such as the original "what are you having for dinner" thread.

Kim
Kimmie is correct. Somehow the system seems to break off a thread that has gottengynormous. So, over in the chat area there are a few that had to be restarted.
