alternate shop to send package

I just went to a UPS shop to mail a package by priority. I was told it would cost me $22 but if I sent by UPS it would be $12. Can someone tell me what I can say why I want to go with Priority? They told me it would get there the same time and I would not get any complimentary $50 insurance with Priority which I did think was inaccurate.

You say that your mother asked you to drop off the package and she is old school and prefers USPS. Or, don't say anything at all other than your insistence to send USPS.
I have done these UPS shops where they have directed me to go to the post office which was in the same shopping center. I just told them I was in a hurry and had no time. The next time I had one of those UPS places to do my post office shop I made sure to go when the post office was closed as UPS has longer hours. If they had referred me I would have said I could not wait or had no time to mail it the next day. They also always tell me there will be no insurance or tracking. The first time this happened to me the clerk told me there was no tracking as she was stapling the tracking number to my receipt!
Just re read your question and it sounds like they were telling you UPS was cheaper and better but at my UPS store the USPS costs around 22 but the same service from UPS costs 42.

My boss sent me and only uses USPS priority...I just follow directions (roll eyes)
It’s a sale and the buyer insisted I send that way...it’s her money so I just do what I am asked.
No thanks, I prefer the USPS Priority.
Only USPS delivers to the office of this complex...the others deliver to the door and I want this to go to the office for pickup. Weird I know but this is how the complex operates (this is true for some places I know where I live)
Thanks for the suggestions and I will use the advice.I was so stunned when they gave me the cost I told them I would be back.According to my instructions it says it will pay up to $17 for mailing but will they pay the extra ?I have never done a shop where the cost was this high.

If I need to, I tell them, "I know it's more, but UPS seems to have issues delivering to this address, so we always ship by USPS."

I have also uses, "My uncle works for the Post Office, so we have to ship it that way to them."

Use whatever you feel comfortable saying.

Generally, I just say, "Priority Mail," if they give me choices. If you say it with authority, as though it was the smartest thing ever said, they rarely question you.

If you are shipping more than 1, less than 2 pounds to Zone 5, the MSC will adjust the reimbursement.
I have gone over and it has been covered. I generally ship to zone 8. It may just be my scheduler who is very nice. But then I never know whether it is covered until the payment comes in.
I was stunned at first by how much they mark up the price. It seems like UPS wants to collect their standard fee even when they are not actually delivering the package. I have always been reimbursed for the full amount, but since the cost exceeds the maximum, you won't be reimbursed for the box, so use an inexpensive box.

Shopping Southeast Pennsylvania, Delaware above the canal, and South Jersey since 2008
Because UPS at the recipient's address is very unreliable.
If you were sending to me, that would be completely correct and not made up because I always tell people to not send to me via UPS, they are awful here.

$10 handling fee around here. I back calculated it once.

So, when it is $12.65, I know that they are going to charge $22.65.
"The last time I shipped via UPS, the package stayed on the truck for three days because the drivers went back to the terminal instead of finishing their deliveries. If I ship Priority Mail, I know it will get there on time."

I learn something new every day, but not everyday!
I've learned to never trust spell-check or my phone's auto-fill feature.
Here is another true story you can use...my daughter was living in New Orleans. She lived right on St Charles Ave which is a main street with a tram stop on her corner and lots of people coming and going, Her building, as many others in this country, had a locked front door with the mail boxes inside. I found out the hard way her first Christmas there that I could only send her boxes by USPO, They have a key to her front door so at least the only ones who can steal the item is someone who lives there or is a friend of someone in the building to let them in. Anything delivered by UPS or Fed EX is left out on the public street with scores of people passing every hour. All her gifts were stolen. Fortunately those UPS and Fed Ex deliveries were from online stores so they made it good. Unfortunately she had no xmas/hanukah gifts on the holiday itself and several items I bought at a good pre Christmas sale and they were no longer available.
