A post on taxes a few months back ...

Several months back someone was kind enough to post about taxes as an Independent Contractor but I can’t seem to locate that post now. Can anyone help me find that information? Thanks! smiling smiley

The only thing I really miss from Volition - the nice and tidy taxes thread...

Shopping domestic and international locations since 2003.
I’m unsure how to file. I know my husband doesn’t want to itemize because the tax laws are such that the standard deduction covers it, but he believes the addition of this Independent contractor income will result in our owing more this year. If I can’t deduct expenses this line of work isn’t going to cut it. I was hoping to understand how the experienced folks handle this. smiling smiley
You MS earnings and expenses get reported on Schedule C, not anywhere else, if you want tp be able to write off your expenses. I hope that you kept good records of mileage traveled to and from MS assignments because that can dramatically reduce any taxes. No need to itemize on Schedule 1040 to write off expenses. The Form 1040 mentioned business expenses BUT only for employees, NOT for ICs. You will owe Social Security and Medicare taxes on your net Schedule C income, but in the first year there is a rule that gets you out of any potential penalty for not paying those quarterly.

If you use TurboTax, it will walk you through everything about Schedule C by asking you questions and pointing the way at every step.

Based in MD, near DC

Poor customer service? Don't get mad; get video.
I suggest sitting down with a professional this year. You will likely have to pay for the service, but, most likely, the service will pay for itself this year as s/he will find quite a few more deductions and credits than you are likely to find on your own. Moreover, the professional will be far more likely to know any changes to the tax laws this year that the average person may not realize exist. At the very least, it will give you good peace of mind....

If you pay attention, ask questions and turn it into a learning opportunity, you ought to be able to duplicate the effort yourself next year.

Walesmaven: Thank you for that information! I definitely didn’t make enough my first 6 months of last year to even consider sending in taxes quarterly. I wasn’t even sure how far I would go with shopping in general, so I’m glad there is a rule like that. I’ve kept all my records but I just need to organize it all. Thank you very much!

MFJohnston: I think that is an excellent idea. My husband is stubborn and has always insisted on doing the taxes even though I think we would’ve paid less taxes in the past had we used a professional. sad smiley
