I suggest sitting down with a professional this year. You will likely have to pay for the service, but, most likely, the service will pay for itself this year as s/he will find quite a few more deductions and credits than you are likely to find on your own. Moreover, the professional will be far more likely to know any changes to the tax laws this year that the average person may not realize exist. At the very least, it will give you good peace of mind....
If you pay attention, ask questions and turn it into a learning opportunity, you ought to be able to duplicate the effort yourself next year.

I’m unsure how to file. I know my husband doesn’t want to itemize because the tax laws are such that the standard deduction covers it, but he believes the addition of this Independent contractor income will result in our owing more this year. If I can’t deduct expenses this line of work isn’t going to cut it. I was hoping to understand how the experienced folks handle this.
Hard work builds character and homework is good for your soul.
