Post office shops- wait time

I usually only have to wait under 5 minutes in line. Today it was 29 minutes!

Sounds like the red vest was asleep at the switch. A common occurrence, from what I've seen in the 2 months they've had the program.
Starting at the beginning of the year the POs in my area have lobby assistants who wear red vests. They are supposed to work the line, asking the hazmat question, encouraging use of the SSK, retrieving packages and accepting dropoffs, etc., all meant to shorten the line and the wait time. I assumed the program was national, but maybe not.

As with anything else, some of them are outstanding, actually working for a living, and others sit on a stool and gaze at the line.
I usually wait one or two minutes as well but this week I had to wait about 15 minutes. It was the day after Presidents Day so maybe that's the reason.
It's always extremely variable for me. Sometimes I'm in and out in minutes other times it can take 30+. Sometimes there will be lobby assistants or someone from the back area helping customers collecting packages or buying stamps. I try to avoid shops the first few days of the month because so many customers are purchasing money orders to pay bills and the lines are often extremely long.
Ahh, no red vests here. I get what you are talking about now, though. There are lobby assistants but they are not wearing red vests. Sometimes they are dressed in normal post office attire and sometimes in street clothes.
The Lobby Assistants in CA have worn red vests for as long as I can remember. A couple of years at least. They usually pull people from the line to use the SSK. I have not seen them ask about the contents of the package in at least 2 years.
There is one post office in my area that will not let you pay at the counter with a credit card. They are nuts. You can do the whole interaction and be ready to pay, and they will stop and walk you to the SSK. I have shopped no less than 100 Post Offices in multiple states and only this one location is weird like that.
I had this happen at one location last year. Lately some clerks have tried to switch to a handheld system at the last minute for my payment. I've gotten good at insisting I don't trust the hand held or self service and that they use the terminal. It's really annoying.

Sometimes the tellers wear red vests too I've noticed. Are they in compliance when they do that?
Great question. I don't mark off for them but hadn't really thought about it. I do make a note if the clerk is wearing postal t shirts or sweatshirts that I assume is OK for working in the back area but not on the approved list for clerks.
