"Route" can mean a couple of things, depending on the scheduler/MSC. It always means "A group of shops."
1) Sometimes, a shopper an be assigned a "bunch" of shops by a single MSC, often as a For the same client. Such shops can be done in a single day or over the course of a month, depending on the exact situation. This is likely the usage you saw on the job board.
2) A shopper can create a "route" of shops for a single trip, which can be a single day, several days, or several weeks. Such a route can be for a single MSC or multiple MSC's.

Hard work builds character and homework is good for your soul.

Thanks for the information. I was told shoppers are receiving travel expenses (pay) for doing route shops. I was considering doing a few route shops myself, so I asked around and got several different answers about it. It left me quite confused about what it is. Again, thanks.
I used to do route shops all the time.
Example: 1 MSC had bank shops, 1 MSC had grocery store shops. My route would be from my home to the next town I would shop a bank branch and a store, next town over, another bank branch and 1 grocery store, next town 1 bank shop this would be the same day, some bonused, some not, no gas payment. These shops were in a radius of only a few miles. About $108.00 for the day, could be more or less.
One scheduler allowed me to pick the dates in the certain towns to complete.
Another route could be 3 to 4 city banks all with bonuses $110. I do not have to travel far. Most banks are within walking distance, time would only be a few hours including driving time.

Was it from an email from Secret Shopper? I just saw that.

They have no money. I have been working for them for 21 years now. You're lucky to get a fee on most of their jobs. I'd be very surprised if they offered true route shop fees.

Some companies will put a group of hard to assign locations together and offer them in a group as a route for a substantial bonus or mileage expenses. They are often in rural locations, but sometimes iffy neighborhood in big cities, too.

Yes you can get bonus pay for travel if it is not in your local area. Sometimes it is offered proactively, other times you have to ask for it, and sometimes they will not give you travel pay whether you ask for it or not.
