ETA: two young ladies (in their 20’s) that worked at the Nordstrom make-up counter are very sick. One is in the ICU, and it doesn’t look good for her at all. Those counters were being shopped 2 weeks ago.

You should be able to get the federal IC unemployment, $600/week, which was enacted last week. Federal, but administered by the state. Its worth investigating.
From the Ohio DJFS as of today (says the same thing it did last week, I check it daily):

Question 9: Are self-employed individuals and contractors eligible for unemployment benefits?

Answer: Currently, self-employed individuals and 1099 contractors are not eligible for unemployment benefits. However, Governor DeWine has asked the federal government to implement a Disaster Unemployment Assistance (DUA) program. DUA programs are sometimes implemented after natural disasters and offer benefits to individuals who do not qualify for regular unemployment. For continuing updates, please visit [jfs.ohio.gov].

Question 20:Is Disaster Unemployment Assistance available in Ohio?

Answer: At this time, no, but please continue to check back for updates. Additional information and support for Ohioans can be found at [coronavirus.ohio.gov].
You might have been told wrong. This says 1099 self-employed are eligible, and should file now as it will be retroactive to 1/27.

And Sen Portman says it will be expanded in Ohio but will take time.

Anyway, I hope you and others there are eligible.

I'm actually going to be okay, not like that I would turn down any additional money. I will keep checking, but I copied and pasted that from minutes ago. We will see what transpires in the future, but my understanding was that you had to apply within your state from the state unemployment website, which is supposedly updated daily. Thank you for providing the links.
Ahhh, upon researching the links, here is what I read:

Am I eligible to apply for unemployment compensation?

You are eligible if you were required to be isolated or quarantined by a medical professional, local health authority or employer because of COVID-19, the respiratory disease caused by the novel coronavirus. You do not need to actually be diagnosed with COVID-19 to receive benefits.

You're also eligible if your employer shut down operations due to the novel coronavirus.

Am I eligible for benefits if I self-quarantine?

In most cases, no. Those who are working from home are not eligible for unemployment. If an employer required workers to stay home but did not offer an option to work remotely or online, the employees might be eligible for unemployment.

So none of that applies to me. I was not required to self-quarantine, I chose to do so. The merchandising company I work for is completing product retail resets inside of grocery stores. It basically is moving product around on shelves, pulling discontinued items, and cutting in new items. IMO, it's non-essential. My company (who gets paid for me to go to work by the grocery supplier) insists that since it is working inside of a grocery store, it is essential work. I don't think it's worth risking my health to go to work, and what if I am an asymptomatic carrier and infect a grocery store employee or customer? It's not worth the risk, so I took a leave of absence for at least a month. They aren't going to fire me over it, but they are not happy about it, either.

Most states don't have the changes up on their website yet but as a self employed person you are absolutely eligible for expanded unemployment through the CARES Act.

But that's just it. I am not only a self-employed person, I am also an employee, and an employee who chose to self-quarantine against my company's wishes, since they firmly declare that their business inside of grocery stores is essential (it's not).
Ahhhh. Gotcha. I didn't know you were an employee.

Screw it. Our country is going to be in bad enough debt as it is, and I am blessed to have enough to get through these times...BOTOH if something changes where I become eligible, I won't be too proud to take it smiling smiley I could use some extra beans, rice, and TP in the future if our country continues to "go to hell in a handbasket" as my grandmother used to say. What the hell does that mean, anyway? Anyone know?
My finances are so complicated anyway with both 1099s and W2s, doing taxes alone can be exhausting. Oh, BTW, I read an article the other day that stated I still had to file by April 15th but if I owe money (and I will), there is an extension on that. Anyone know if that's true?
You do not have to file or pay until July 15 now.

The President has extended the stay at home order through April. So we need to stay home.

Even before this epidemic, you can extend to file to October 15.

Thank you for that information. But don't you generally have to pay for an extension? I don't owe enough to bother, but thanks again.
bmttinman, mystery shopping is not essential. I wouldn't do the shops, and wouldn't think twice before cancelling.

Regarding expanded unemployment benefits, general advice is to file a claim, then wait and see, even though many States are not prepared. A stylist friend of mine did such. He said he had to get creative to advance to the next field in order to complete the application.

No; it is free.

I sound terrible for saying this, but I've had a bad habit on filing on time the past couple of years. As a result, I've just taken advantage of the October 15 tax extension:

"E-file Your Extension Form for Free
Individual tax filers, regardless of income, can use Free File to electronically request an automatic tax-filing extension.

Filing this form gives you until Oct. 15 to file a return.

To get the extension, you must estimate your tax liability on this form and should also pay any amount due."

In "normal" times, it does not cost anything to file for an extension. however, you are still expected to pay taxes on April 15th. So you would need to estimate what you will owe in order to avoid paying interest in October. Currently, the due date has changed from April 15th to July 15th.

My state (not Ohio) has a message on its website stating that it has not yet gotten enough clarity about the new law to process unemployment claims from ICs, but to keep checking back. I suspect that many states are in this situation so we should just keep checking.
This is from my states unemployment website:
"VEC will begin issuing $600 provided for by the CARES Act once we have received guidance from the United States Department of Labor and have modified our system to implement that guidance."

We ( Virginians) are also under a stay at home order until June 10th.

I've tried calling the VEC ( Virginia Unemployment Office) and the line is busy and automatically disconnects.

I'm wondering if I can apply on the website and then the $600 will be retroactive or does the above message mean I have to wait to apply altogether because I'm an independent contractor? Any thoughts?
I have a vacation planned at a resort in Williamsburg for June 17. I have a suspicion it's not going to happen.
I'm feeling like I need to file my 2019 taxes now, so that I can use that doc to file for UE. I'm getting very worried. Seven of my re-scheduled demos have been postponed indefinitely.
