Shop editors and grammar

I think there was a recent discussion of this on the boards, but my search didn't bring up anything.

I did a shop yesterday and received a review this morning. I regularly get 10s for my reports, so was surprised to see I had an 8. The editor said that that there were "Numerous changes were made in punctuation", and then cited one example of comma placement that I believe was correct on my part. And then he/she reduced my pay from $18 to $16.90!

I copied and pasted the 'reply to' email address into the address field when I replied to state my case, copying in the scheduler also. Glad I did, because that 'reply to' address was rejected.

Thanks for reading my rant :-)

Yikes! I've never heard of pay being docked for grammar.

Sometimes editors know less about correct grammar than the shoppers do.
I've also never heard of being docked for grammar before! That's awful!! Do you feel comfortable sharing the MSC that did this??? I would also take it higher up, especially concerning the docked pay!!
I also remember a thread like this where someone, or several people, said that their reports had been changed from correct spelling/grammer to incorrect, then got points off for it.

ETA: Hahaha, I meant GRAMMAR!

I routinely got those when it came to one particular convenience store chain. I learned not to use conversational English in my reports. I finally decided that as easy as the shop was, it wasn't worth the $4 + $5 it offered.
I have three opinions:

1. These spurious deductions lower your overall score, at least for awhile, and might make someone's friend or relative seem more desirable as a shopper. The friend or relative might pick up more shops and get more money while you have to scramble a bit to maintain your accustomed work load. This entire concept requires more investigation as it is vague and we cannot see shopper's identities and scores. It just rings true in my bones.

2. Along these lines, I believe that employees have worn the wrong name badges. As a result, my report was changed to reflect the 'truth' or the 'reality' in which named persons were not on site when I was there. They, whoever they are in truth and reality, should get some deduction, too. !

3. Merching is free from these issues. You show up as yourself and everyone is meant to know who you are. I like merching.

Which company reduces pay? In over 20 years I’ve never had that happen. I’ve probably done upwards of 30,000 to 40,000 shops by now. I quit keeping track about 10 years ago. I’ve probably received 100 8’s. One or 2 7’s and a 5 (adios Service Check). I’ve messed up shops that made them unusable, probably a dozen times in my career, but I have never been docked pay. That is crazy!
Former editor here. I've never heard of this, either, and if an editor on one my teams made changes like you describe they wouldn't last long.
I got sick and tired enough of an editor rubber stamping, "This was a detailed, thorough shop requiring moderate revision" on perfectly good reports. I don't do them any more and let the scheduler know why she has to highly bonus them. The irritation isn't worth it.

It was Intellishop. Other than the scheduler who should I be communicating with? I don't care about the grade, but the money part really irks me.

I have been researching this a bit. Ron Welty is the President of Intellishop. From what I can tell, their FORMAT for emailing them might get you to Ron Welty if you type this: ron.welty@intelli-shop.com (note the dash in the word intelli-shop is part of the email address). I would try emailing Mr. Welty and CC'ing the EDITOR and the SCHEDULER so they all know who is getting the email. I would be very polite and courteous and explain to him as you did above. Include your Intellishop Shopper ID when you sign your name at the bottom. (If you have never seen it, it's on your Shopper Log page, under the "Announcements" banner). I hope this helps. If anyone else out there has any other contacts for you, I hope they will add to this name. Good luck!!

Here's what I know about Intelli-shop.
They hire college students for minimum wage to edit your reports.
I have seen how you write KathyG. There's nothing wrong with your grammar or punctuation.
I'd let it go. It's less than $2. I am pretty certain that they don't care. I am very certain that Ron Welty doesn't care. The last time I posted factual information about Ron Welty's attitude, the moderators removed it. He is well known in the MS industry.
I've had false bad grammar critiques before from an editor. Never been docked pay.

Have been docked shop points.

I thought about arguing the case before, but I chose to let it go, b/c it was not worth my time. However, if I got unfairly docked a lot from the same company and my shopper rating went down, I'd pursue it then.

I've thought about "pulling rank" on an editor before too, as I've probably edited more stuff (at one of the highest professional levels possible) in one year than some MS editors may have done in 10 or 20 years of work. *possible hyperbole there* grinning smiley Seriously, I really may have, so it irritates me as a purist. But, I have let it go ultimately, b/c it's not worth my time (yet. . .).

Thanks for all the encouragement and suggestions. At this point I'm going to sit on my hands and do nothing. I may change my mind.down the line, depending on if more information is revealed.

The quality of editors varies tremendously. Some our absolutely great. Some simply do not know the language. My favorite was an one who told me that I had "invented a word." I sent a link to the word in the OED, BCC to the program manager (who I know well) and the scheduler. The word was one that any person with a good high school education would likely know, and certainly anyone with a college class under her/his belt. It certainly was not a GRE word.
I will tell you that I do a lot of work for intellishop and have never had money deducted for grammar errors . I would simply email the scheduler and ask if there was a mistake on the payment amount entered in the shop? I've had that happen once and it was quickly rectified.
I'm guessing the guidelines said nothing about pay being docked. There is one MSC, QACI, that has a shopper grading system with payouts based on the shopper rating. Shoppers start at the highest payout so you'd have to really be screwing up a lot to end up with lower payouts. This is clearly explained in detail at every stage of signing up as a shopper as well as in the guidelines of each shop. (I've found that the grading is very fair.)
Quick question. Where can we look up our rating? I have done a few Jack in the box shops and none show a Shopper Rating. I tried to self assign myself one today, and it says I do not have a shopper rating of 6 and can't, but I don't know why. I've followed all instructions and don't know what to do.

Send an email to the scheduler. They don't rate JITB shops. It's too early in the week to self-assign. You should be waiting until Wednesday at the earliest, unless you just want to do them cheaper than anyone else?
