Hazmat shops....just curious

Why do you think we are limited to zones 5-8 for USPS hazmat shops? I have lots of things to mail but few to people this far away. I can't see how the shop would be affected if mailing to a closer zone, since it is the mail/not mail that is the important part of the scenario. What am I missing here?

I do not know if this is the reason but shipping far away guarantees the package will go on an airplane and not a truck. The hazmat stuff is mainly dangerous if in a plane.
Sandyf is correct. Zones 1-4 are ground and allow most of the scenarios. Zone 5-8 go by air on passenger planes in many cases.
My question is why the hazmat reimbursement now is only $2. You can hardly buy anything for that price. Not even some tape needed for these jobs. I guess i will stick with reg jobs since i want to ship a package. The fee is not enough for me to do the job with only $2 more if not shipped.
Yeah, I bought my regular sheet of stamps on Friday before I realized they were only reimbursing $2 of them now.... sad smiley That was nice while it lasted.
This is my first run on these shops - what is the expected outcome generally. That the package will be denied Priority and diverted to ground? Or that it will be denied out right and we gotta find something to spend $2 on?
From past experience my take is that the official regular USPS locations very often do the job correctly. Not so often in the other locations. So you are essentially doing the job for the base fee plus $2 in my city. In my case I like to send the packages to my kids so there is some additional value in that to me. On this type of shop it is likely I will not send my package. So I prefer to do the reg shops where I know I will get the added value of a box of stuff for my kids. If there was a decent bonus I would take them but that is unlikely here. So far I have not seen any of these bonused.
What's a typical bonus you see on these? I took one at base just to see how much was involved, so I'll have a better idea when they pop up again where to set my need at.

Are these generally monthly or quarterly or just no rhyme/reason?

You can see the bonuses. Just look at the filled shops that are pending. They put the bonus right up there for you to see it.
So i don't usually send mail regularly and have lost touch with terminology. I attempted today to send priority, was asked questions and ended up getting a reciept that said 'parcel select' - what exactly is that ---- is that still considered priority or is it retail ground?
