Sonic Closed

I would think that Sonic, where people eat in their cars or outdoors instead of in the restaurant, would be better suited towards surviving the restrictions. The restaurant closest to me (but still 30+ minutes away) closed a couple of years ago. I found it odd given that they were on a major road.

Some Sonics are eat-in, supplemented with drive thru windows. They have phones at each table for ordering, and a server/carhop delivers the meal. I used to visit one like that in Arkansas.

The only Sonic in NYC (Flushing, Queens) closed shortly after the pandemic began. It had only been open about a year. It, too, was eat-in but no drive thru. In the NYC Sonic, instead of phones at the table, customers ordered at the counter.

Sonic is my guilty pleasure! Oh how I wish there were mystery shops for them in my area. I like ordering extra stuff on everything, and some stores have issues with custom order accuracy.
Two things I don't like about Sonic shops

1) You can not ask for no ice/light ice in your drink

2) You can't get no salt fries/tots.

But I will do them once in an while

I find their burgers to be vile. When I do a Sonic shop I stick to the hot dogs, not that those are primo but they're better than the burgers. The cherry limeade is fantastic though.
I always get the burgers.. Wish I could get the bacon club toaster. In my area they don't have them but at other Sonics (That I visit when I go out of town). they do.

The burger I get is close to the reimbursement fee.

I guess Sonic does not read our comments or does not care sad smiley sad smiley sad smiley sad smiley sad smiley sad smiley sad smiley sad smiley

I eat at Sonic a lot for lunch, how do I sign up as a mystery shopper?

Sign up for the top ten MSCs in the list below and you'll run across them.
New Steak sandwich with cheese on a foot-long hot dog bun. I do not think so and besides, the MSC will not say that it is allowed. I made that mistake when the pretzel burger bun came out a few years ago.
Yes, I am in Pennsylvania. I read that the same franchisee owned 10 locations and closed all of them.
There is a Sonic in Little Rock (Cantrell Rd) that is dine-in and drive-thru. Customers can also order from a menu board near the entrance to do take-out, or to eat at the dining tables set up outside.

There is no park-and-order at this location like at most Sonics. Other Sonics in Little Rock have the standard park-and-order format.

I suspect there are others like this in the system, as the MS company uses a separate form for shops there.

What's the purchase requirement at Sonic? I'll be near one this week and there are shops available.
About 13 yrs. ago, 14 Sonics opened in the greater Dayton, Oh. area; the first closed within a year. IN 2021, two remain open, but I do not have the slightest idea how, as I regularly pass one and there might be one or two vehicles in the lot. Someone or ones lost a pile of money.

Me too! I love Sonic. It makes the perfect fast lunch for me when I'm taking a break from work and eating alone.

You probably wouldn't like the shops, though, because you are not allowed to order extra stuff on everything. Their focus seems to be on how fast they can serve it so custom orders aren't allowed. You are not even allowed to request no ice or lite ice in drinks.

The order requirement is an entree, side, and a drink. They provide a list of acceptable entrees, sides and drinks. The list is pretty long although it excludes chicken. Pretty much all the burgers and hot dogs are on the list as well as sides fries, tots, onion rings, and mozzarella sticks. Most drinks are on the list.

edit: sorry, auto correct changed my words to something I didn't say.

Thanks. You lost me at excludes chicken.

I have heard Sonic described as:

"the great American fast food tragedy" grinning smiley

I think the throwback drive-in skate-hop idea is not bad. It's unique, nostalgic, fun, and convenient. Problem: food, food, food.

The coolest amenities or fun gimmicks won't last and bring me back if the main attraction is bad. Am I the only one who feels like their food tastes microwaved?

I shall try that drink next time I shop them.

Their hot dogs used to have a really weird and gross aftertaste. Now, they've got a new brand, but I still feel they are of low quality overall. I get the chili cheese dog with onions added. They usually don't put enough chili on mine and it's thin and not fresh tasting. The buns are throw away low quality. The hot dog seems microwaved, is often not hot, and is so so.

Their burgers are pretty good or horrible depending on location. The two locations in upscale neighborhoods have great cheese burgers. Fresh veggies, juicy hot patties, and heated bun and melted cheese. At other locations, it feels like the staff don't care. The veggies are wilted and/or slimy...the burger patty can be burnt or "old" tasting (sometimes with weird texture)...the buns are cold or room temperature....it's packaged all sloppy.
I agree. Even when they are obviously freshly cooked, they are just limp and soggy.

why are Sonic's fries the worst?
I’ve never gotten the fries. The tots are ok. The onion rings are very good, normally. With the increased reimbursement, getting o rings no longer puts me over. The limeades, plain or flavored, are delicious.
I do like their tots and onion rings (I only don't get them, b/c of going over reimb.).

My reason for getting fries from time to time is to diversify my order more to avoid shopper detection. I'll change up drinks for the same reason.
No Sonics around here but as a diner on my own dime I almost always have favorites at each restaurant i go to and order the same exact meal every time at those places. I switch up my eating by going somewhere else. I wonder if all the places I eat at on my own dime think I am a mystery shopper?

Hmmmm. Possibly if:
a.) they have a ms program
b.) said program has strict ordering requirements
c.) employees get to see receipts/orders
d.) employees notice ordering pattern of ms shops
The MSC that does Sonic's drive-thru shops states in their guidelines that we should never order the same meal twice in a row. For me, I like to switch up the drinks, but occasionally switch to fries from tots.

Something about their fries....maybe a really bad potato source....or they're frozen and preserved poorly ....but they're really bad, imo.
The Vilonia, Arkansas Sonic has a dine-in area (or it did the last time I was there - 20 years ago!). The Dearborn, Michigan location also has a dine-in area - and the restrooms are only accessible by going inside. The Livonia, Michigan store has restrooms accessible by going inside, but I don't remember if they have a dine-in area or not. I'm dreading having to evaluate the restrooms again once the pandemic is over and we're back to "normal."
Yeah, Virginia has some dine-in locations too, but they are in the minority. About 1 out of every 5 or so has a dining room. Often, you can ask for a slightly higher rate to perform those, as they are a bit more time-consuming and complicated. I stick to the drive-thru only and never do them.

As someone who worked at Burger King for years, I think this is a pretty common ordering habit. I even had plenty of regulars who came in every day and ordered the same thing.

99 % of the time I get the same thing at BK, Sonic, or Mcalasters unless they have like a LTO thing going then I will try that. Yes I know that are some stuff you can not get on Mystery Shops
I keep forgetting that It is a different place than I normally go to and they have no idea what my usual is when I ask for it.
