Encountered my first blue light special when doing a gas station inspection a few days ago.

Even though I have been doing gas station inspections for many years now, I was caught off guard when completing the bathroom evaluation. Right when I opened up the door, a blight blue light lit up the room like something out of a party. It even turned the toilet and surrounding walls with bright pink hues. For those that do not know, some gas stations install the blue lights to deter drug users. The blue light makes finding a vain almost impossible to shoot a needle into. Needless to say, I used heavy amounts of hand sanitizer after that visit.. lol !!!

By the way, if anyone wants to know what a bathroom looks like with the blue lights, I posted it below.

Interesting! I have heard from many gas station workers that they have frequent ODs in the bathrooms but never heard about this.

blue light special reminds me of the old --- Attention Kmart shoppers, We have a Blue Light Special on xyz

Shopping Western NY, Northeast and Central PA, and parts of Ohio and West Virginia. Have car will travel anywhere if the monies right.

I've run into the "blue bathrooms", too. Though in regards to its cleanliness, you were probably safer there then if you went to another location nearby that doesn't have it. It's a smart tool and will stop the addicts like that.

Wow, crazy! Your photo jogged my memory; not sure if I remember these from a major rx co., dr.'s office, or gas station. I do remember like what in the world?! Thanks for the explanation!

I had never heard of this and was interested. I found several articles using Google. This one from a health organization indicates that it doesn't always work as a deterrent, and has some downsides [www.fraserhealth.ca] This is from the National Institutes of Health, [www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov] and this from NPR: [www.npr.org]

I thought of something similar and wondered what would be on special at a gas station (other than Monster and Coke).

Ok. Naive question- Why would someone shoot up in a gas station bathroom rather than literally anywhere else? Car? Back alley?
