Payments

Hi, I am just beginning and I am wondering if you get paid for shops and get reimbursed or is it one or the other?

It depends on the shop.

Some shops do not require a purchase or they require a purchase and a return. In other words, you are keeping nothing and so you are working for a fee, most likely.

Some shops pay no fee but reimburse you for something, such as a retail item, food, etc. Unfortunately, the reimbursement amount for some shops may not be enough to cover even the cheapest things you can buy at those businesses.

Some shops pay a combination of a fee and a reimbursement.

Every shopper will have to figure out for themselves which shops make sense for them.

Good luck.
Most shop descriptions clearly state the fee and reimbursement limits separately. The ones you have to watch out for are the ones that state a fee and require a purchase, but don't mention reimbursement. (I'm thinking Intellishop here.) For those, the purchase amount comes out of your fee, and whatever is left is what you earn.
Just be aware that no valid mystery shopping company will send you a check before you perform the services! And never, ever, ask you to buy gift cards and send them the numbers as your assignment!

Sometimes it's both, sometimes it's reimbursement only, sometimes it's pay that includes the reimbursement, sometimes it's just pay that's not intended to include reimbursement.

You will usually get paid by the end of the following month. I second the advice above regarding checks and gift cards. If the pay seems too high to be the real deal, it probably isn't.

In Nevada, you get both. In other states, you sometimes get reimbursed but no pay, often you get both. I noticed that beginning about 2 years ago that most Arizona shops listed on iSecretShop.com job board (video shops excepted) stopped announcing whether or not the shops included pay plus reimbursement, or just a grand total. I stopped doing such shops when they started being that vague about pay.
