General Question: Do you rename photos before loading them into reports?

I usually download pics for my jobs from my iPhone onto my desktop and rename the ones I plan to upload into a report. The majority of MSCs do not explicitly request that pics be renamed, but I was wondering what other shoppers do. For example, I recently completed a gas station audit with lots of pics because the gas station was kind of crappy. It took a long time to rename each pic. Is there any benefit to the editor if pics are named?

I upload them from my phone and I do not rename them. I have never had a problem doing it that way.
Well, the name will help the editor understand what thing caused you to include that picture! Benefit to both you and the editor.

I never rename photos and have had no issues. I am not not an editor, but I presume they see a web form similar to ours and they know what the photo is supposed to represent.
I rename them in a way that I can identify them usually part of the address and the date as well as where the shop was. Ex: XYZ 2399 1-25-22
I rename them only when I am submitting multiple photos. ie bedroom table, bedroom light, bedroom carpet, etc. If it's just one receipt nope
Renaming pictures is time consuming. I do this only when required by the shop.

One survey permits an equivalent. For each image, there is a space to explain the purpose of all required and any additional images. This feels different when typing on the phone and when using a computer. Some images should be explained.

To explain the purpose of an image, I might say [but would not because this is not a real survey] "The plaid monkey who was wearing a green leisure suit was standing on top of the fence that surrounded their designated enclosure while juggling bananas." Or, "The Main ID sign pole was almost completely rusted and bent so much that the neon portion of the sign was less than four feet from the ground." In a perfect world? "Main ID sign as seen from the east side parking pad." "Twenty seven holes in one wall of the unisex restroom." "Fountain area was fully stocked and clean."

Coming from someone who has editing experience.... no I never do. And I have never once looked at the 'name' of the photo while editing. I ALWAYS looked at the meta data that shows time/ date to make sure that matches up with the time the shopper stated they were at the location. To me that is much more important.
I rarely NOT rename my photos. I usually take multiple photos in quick succession. Renaming photos helps me organize them and makes searching for a particular photo later easier.

I use Google Photos to automatically backup my photos and usually submit downloaded photos instead of photos transferred from my phone. As a result, the metadata of photos I upload to a report usually shows the date/time of when I downloaded the photos instead of the date/time when I took the pictures. Since an editor for ACL once questioned me about the discrepancy, I often add an explanation in my report. If necessary, I can provide copies of the photos that are transferred from my phone, showing the original metadata.

100% agree! Same experience on my side. Now once in a while I will name it if I have the option like an ACL report if there's something I want to specifically call out but I don't go through the trouble of renaming my photos in my gallery.
If I am working in an app, I do not need to name the images. The images automatically go into their designated slots. Years ago, when I had multiple images per shop, I named them in folders on my computer. Then, it was easy to put the numerous images where they belonged. But that was then. This is now, and I only rename images when I am told to do so.

The only time I rename photos is if they provide supplementary information not called out in the questionnaire, such as "full trash can in drive thru" or "damaged canopy over drive thru."
I'm very glad to read this thread. I have always taken time to rename all my photos which has been very time consuming. Now that I know it isn't looked at by the editors I will cease this practice.

I don't know if I started doing this for me or thinking I needed to, it's been too long. Although it did help me organize the photos.

And, Insight, a suggestion. Put your date first in the year, month, date format this will make it easier to do a sort and find your files.

IE you do XYZ 2399 1-25-22, I suggest 22-01-25 XYZ 2399. Also, include the leading zero in the month otherwise the 1 and 10 will not sort chronologically.
I rename photos for my own use so I know what to upload to what. It's just the way I've always done it.

Same here. I rename them so that I can keep them straight and immediately know which ones to upload where in the report. When there are photos that look similar at first glance, but are different views or point out slightly different aspects of something, this is invaluable to me. I just had a report recently that required different views of the same thing, and having renamed them "item-front, item-right, item-left" helped a lot.

I've learned to never trust spell-check or my phone's auto-fill feature.
I almost always rename my photos, and I submit most of my shops via computer. I submit only a few of my shops by smartphone, and I do not rename those.
Absolutely not. I dump them into a named file so I can find them easily if necessary and that's it.
I use a computer and rename them but after the first in a series I can just start typing the job info such as msc name and the name pops up and all i have to change on some is the date. But I also like to name them so it is easier to find them if I need them later and also to be able to delete them once they get old enough as the date is included in the name.

The only time i rename photos is when I have to edit the photo to show something specific. Otherwise they are only named with the time and date.
I only rename if required in the shop guidelines. Definitely not worth the time, regardless of the size of the project.

I do take one extra step when organizing photos from the yellow/red and more involved blue/red gas stations. I will make a folder of all the pump photos, and I input them last into the report. I put my browser window into column view and scroll down through the photos in the folder, inputting them into the report in the order the pictures were taken.
