Is this a 2fer or fair play?

Did a phone shop recently where toward the end of the survey there were several questions about my own personal phone service, and my opinions about it and phone service in general. None of these questions were directly related to the shop in question but were more of a survey slipped into the shop survey. I know that companies pay for survey responses. I choose not to take such surveys, so I was a bit miffed. I felt manipulated to answer a personal opinion survey on top of performing the shop. Interested to hear of other examples you may have noticed where personal opinion survey-type questions are asked that seem to be beyond the scope of the shop. Is this practice growing? Is it ok with you?

I did some shops that asked for my basic demographics at the end but it offered the choice of "Prefer not to answer" which is what I chose for every answer. Yes, they are trying to get as much info as they can sell.

Agreed. As shoppers, we are a part of the product being provided, unfortunately. I wouldn't mind so much if the "prefer not to answer" option was offered, as it was in your case, or if the survey was placed at the end and made clear its a separate item. What I don't appreciate is tucking it in the body of the survey with no choice but to answer if we want to be paid, especially when this was not disclosed as a requirement of the shop. Not the biggest issue in the world, but icky none the less.

Some guidelines instruct NOT to answer any follow up surveys.
Someone here suggested not answering the questions because if they want his/her opinion it should be paid for.

Part of a survey to be filled out for a paid assignment? Hmmm asking my age, ethnicity, if I've ever been in the store previously--those are O.K. but not my opinion on my personal phone service.
