I am doing insurance quote phone shops. They involve using a pseudonym, pulling a random address from realtor.com and turning to Cars.com for a vehicle and VIN#.
I can call any agency in the state, so I pull together a plausible scenario with an address within a reasonable distance of an agent's office.
One particular insurance companies' agents will not produce a quote without a driver's license number or SS# and date of birth. I've called multiple offices and they say the require it and their system won't let them proceed without it.
I've objected, saying I've been a victim of identity theft in the past and don't feel comfortable providing that information until I am ready to purchase a policy. I tell the reps I've gotten quotes from other companies without having to divulge that sensitive information.
They maintain they must have it.
From what I hear, other shoppers have gotten this company to give phone quotes without this info. Have some insurance companies changed their rules lately, or are the agents just being hardnosed?
Obviously, I can't give them either. If you've done these shops, what has worked for you? I'd really like to improve my technique and learn if there's something I'm missing here.
