I shop mostly rural stations, where the customers are known, and, frankly, look, talk, and act like I do.
Never a problem. I usually say, "Excuse me, but I'm working (safety vest, lanyard with ID, clipboard), and my job is to check the fuel pumps. Would you be offended if I put a few dollars worth of gas in your tank to test this pump, at no cost to you?"
Then I did some "big city" stations (ROTFLOL: that means they have stoplights).
No go.
Yes, people thought I was up to no good. I was shocked. But these people are on I-80, and they are from somewhere else! They not only said no, they said it rudely, decisively, and loudly -- and trotted inside to report me to the manager!!!
No more big city stations for me, thank you very much!

It may depend on the area of the country, but I tried your idea. It worked a few times, and then I was accused of being up to no good. Unspecified "no good". Maybe it was because I am a man offering gasoline to a female? So, I tried, a man offering gas to a man. It was no go. Again, it could be my area of the country. I am curious about your future experiences.

Was thinking since I won’t be back through any time soon I could be nice to someone and buy them a gallon of gas on my way out — but if it’s diesel, it’d be easier lol
