Places that charge a fee to use your debit/credit card? Your thoughts

No, it is not.
Merchants get charged for every transaction using a debit card but they will not pay a fee to deposit a check.
Also - it is likely the reason these debit card surcharge shops are even available is because the merchant has a contract with the CC processor that they will NOT charge a fee or impose a min. purchase - yet they do it anyway so they are in violation of their agreement.
The shops are probably to check up on these merchants for just this reason.

I am guessing that you have never had a business checking account. Many (not all) business checking accounts have a limited number of free transactions each month (check plus cash deposits and withdrawals) and then the bank starts charging a flat fee for each transaction.

I will NOT patronize any business that charges me a fee to make a purchase. My thought is that such a practice should be illegal unless the practice is prominently posted on a sign with fonts large enough to see from the business' driveway entrance.
I spoke with a payment processor this week. The contact gave me some interesting information. He said there were two options for the processing fee. I could let them charge me the fee which is the traditional way or they could charge the card holder.

I told him I had seen an uptick in merchants charging an additional x% for using a card over the last few years. Unfortunately I did not let him elaborate on how the fee would get charged to the card holder. I might reach out to him at a later date to find out how that program works.
