Leary about giving bank info or ssn

Hi everyone! I've just started mystery shopping again and most companies are asking for my ssn or bank info. I've always been taught to be very careful about whom I give my information to. Has anyone's information ever been compromised? Does anyone know if there are companies that don't require it? I'm just trying to put myself at ease. thanks!!

Pretty much all companies will want your ssn for tax purposes. They will need your bank info if they direct deposit. I don't see any way around it. If you don't feel comfortable giving this info, mystery shopping may not be for you.

I always do a thorough investigation of each mystery shop company before signing with them. Read other people's reviews on this forum.

Good luck!
Fizz: You can do two things:
1. Get EIN from IRS (most accept them, and some who don't adios). It may not be 100% safe, but better than giving out SSN to a company where your potential earning for the year might be big fat zero.
2. Open a small checking account and give info. on that. A separate checking account, and a separate paypal account would be useful during tax time anyway.
Be aware that an EIN in some areas may lead to other issues, such as business registration and licensing in your city, county or state. While in some areas this may not be an issue, we fought that battle with an EIN for a non shopping business that was run out of the home. For me, definitely I will stay with handing out my SSN. Realize that every time you write a check you are handing out your bank routing number and your account number. It is no different providing this information to a company with whom you intend to work. Unauthorized withdrawals from your account are always a bank's liability, so should not be a great source of alarm. I appreciate any company that will pay me by direct deposit.

Of course all of this is contingent upon signing with legitimate companies where you are going to their website to register and you have gotten their identification as a legitimate company from a reliable source.
I have no problem providing my SSN or bank info to reputable MSPs with secured sites (https). For those who don't, we have been able to come up with a way. We talk on the phone, and I am assured that my SSN will be locked up, with limited access.
