Yeah, I always found that to be odd too. I haven't done many of those for awhile, but I usually just wait until the coffee host is not around or it is so busy with other customers that no one is paying attention to me and take a peak.
I am not an Expresso drinker nor knew what one was, but now I do.

When the shop fee is $4 and the reimbrused is $7. The cheapest other drink is $4.59, looking at coffee grounds doesn't seem like a bad idea.

Try the coffee/deli shop where you spend nothing less than $9 on the shop. :-(
That was so sneaky!I am 5 foot tall, and those coffee filter baskets, I had to get on my toes to reach them, so I only looked at one....but the truckstop was amazing, and the hot chocolate is very good. The employee was awesome, but i couldn't get her to leave. So I waited until she was talking to another customer, and I stood on my toes, and glanced. I only looked at one. It would've been most difficult to reach the others. I am so glad she didn't see me....

i said this time around with Mystery shopping, I'd never do FF, (except for the upscale place on Sunday), and this was fun. There are showers there. And tons of stuff to look at. And I saw veggie burgers there...I look for that kind of thing. This one had a reimbursement of 2.00, and paid 7.00. I work from home, so I did it before I began chart auditing this morning. I would do it again, but reaching for those coffee filter things may not be my cup of tea (or in this case, hot chocolate.)
What is the purpose of looking at coffee grounds?

I don't know, but I got a 10 rating. I don't care to look at any more coffee grounds....I could almost not reach it.

Were the grounds supposed to be wet or dry when you looked? I have a theory, but need to know their criteria first.

That confirms my theory. Coffee begins to stale and lose its flavor quickly once ground. Putting grounds in a filter and letting them sit in that hot, moist environment causes further flavor degradation. For the best tasting coffee, one should only put coffee in the filter right before brewing the pot.

At the coffee shop where I worked, we measured out whole beans ahead of time, but didn't grind them until we were ready to brew the coffee. Does this store grind their coffee fresh? Even if they don't, by making sure the ground coffee packages aren't opened until just prior to brewing, they're making sure the coffee will taste as good as possible. It makes a big difference, and whatever store this is gets that.
No, it wouldn't grind them fresh. They have commercialized sealed bags. I don't like coffee, but attended a local Barrista camp (it was free, I had nothing to do...lol) and that's all I could think of too. If the grounds were sitting in the filter, dry, then they would loose their flavor and aroma.
There was another funny and informative threads on these shops, which I used to do as various coffee was great, gas cheap and employees really nice.....but, the whole coffee ground thing. I once said, (your never alone), oh, I love the smell of coffee grounds to mounds of laughter, how often can you do that? Haven't done one all year, think I'm ready again as I like to gas up there, buy candy and have an excotic coffee. They used to give "hero citations".

Live consciously....
