Phone recommendations?

My phone is on the verge of drawing its' last breath.

I am not sure what happened, but starting last week, I will pull it off the charger, fully charged...barely use it, if at all, and it is dead an hour and a half later.

It still works just as fast as it always has, but the battery life has just suddenly gone to hell.

Does anyone have any recommendations for Verizon phones? Anything non iPhone. I'm still grandfathered in from Alltel, so can't do the upgrades/upgrade price. I have to buy outright. So please, nothing over $600 or so.

We're in a similar situation. I still have the first generation Droid, but it sadly needs to be replaced. It's only 3G, doesn't support many of the newer apps, barely holds a charge, drops calls, you name it.

I will also need to pay full price since I am on month-to-month with Verizon. My old contract had an unlimited data plan which they no longer offer and I'm not willing to give it up by signing a new contract in exchange for a discounted phone.

I've been keeping my eye on the HTC One. It was rivaling the Samsung Galaxy S5 a year ago, and now they seem to be comparing both to the new iPhone 6.

Here's an article where you can easily compare some of the specs in a chart: [www.cnet.com]

Please keep me posted if you find something really good or interesting. I'd like to know too.

Battery is built in.

I need a new phone anyway. Theres a bunch of apps that won't work on it because it's one of the oldest versions of Android. I forget which it is, Ice Cream Sandwich, maybe? I don't the latest and greatest, but maybe just something slightly newer than mine

LJ, I've been looking on eBay, used, since they're running that huge promotion. If y oh r phone doesn't sell, you get a $100 eBay coupon free. LOTTA cheap phones up right now. I figure I'll buy one and list mine. It won't sell..too old.

I'm afraid to buy a phone on Ebay. I'm not sure why - I guess maybe because I'm not very tech savvy and I can't trust myself to get one that Verizon supports and that I can get set up. I feel comfortable buying directly from Verizon even if I spend a lot more because I know it'll work okay.

I could probably get more life out of it if I bought a new battery, but I hate spending money on the old thing. Besides, I can't even find it right now, which is nothing unusual. I rarely use it and most of the time, I have no idea where it is. When I do find it, it's always dead.

There are a lot of brand new ones up too, overstock deals. They are Verizon branded phones. You can still add them to your insurance plan within 30 days of purchase.

I'd really like another Motorola but they don't have anything that excites me right now.

I'm looking at a Droid 4 right now for $40 that is supposed to have a great battery life. I figure it could hold me over fine until I find something I like better.

Nexus 4 is pretty sweet.. good battery life but no removable battery. It's going on for cheap now ($200 or less) that the Nexus 5 is out. I use it for personal and business use. Get a hard case for it and you are good to go. I have had mine for two years now.

There are sites where you can compare phones and its specs should you have other recommendations. My hubby had the HTC One phone and it was kaput in less than 6 months. The back of the phone fell apart quickly.

Dixie, was the HTC One all that he had hoped for before it fell apart?

He just wanted it to make phone calls but it is an awful phone if you want to do anything quickly on it. That is something too to take into consideration when buying a new phone. Yes, cheap $49 phones are great for the price but more often than not they are too slow.

Wait. Are we talking about the same phone? The one I'm looking at is a $600+ phone. I'd heard it was lightning fast, but if it's the same one your husband had that was slow, I'll take it off my short list.

No, I think that was in response to me thinking of buying a Droid 4 I found on eBay for $40. It's not something I'd want long term, but I definitely need something to hold me until I do find what I want. Mine is still doing the 100% fully charged to completely dead in 75-90 minutes, even if I don't use it.

I have found out WHY it is doing it, but... can't fix it now.

I'm not sure, he had the HTC One. It came out about two years ago and was blue (http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2013/09/htc-one-blue-2.jpg). HTC One M8 is $700 CAD and is newer so I'm not sure if you are talking about that. I really didn't like that his phone fell apart in such a short time so I have some bias against HTC as a whole. BUT I will say HTC One M8 is very fast.. got to try it out on some shops. The body is thicker and seems more durable. Maybe the M8 is what you are talking about (although I'm sure if it was you would have added the M8 tongue sticking out smiley )

That's a bummer! Any way you could use a flip phone til you are ready/have decided on a phone? Or must you have a smartphone til then?

A slight change of subject but still about phones:

I recall when I first started mystery shopping that some of the companies had discounts for various things, including phone service. Do any of you know who is current on this?

I think I posted elsewhere about my Cricket phone. Its service will be turned off in April because it does not talk to the towers. Cricket will give us some benefits in monthly payments. As you know, AT&T bought them out. I am being assured that the new phone I get will use the AT&T towers well. Cricket is cheaper than AT&T. The problem is that in the more remote towns I go to fairly often, there is no service at all unless it is AT&T. When I had a backup AT&T pay as you go phone once, and when the whole town lost power because a car hit a tower, that cheap phone still worked.
Unfortunately, Consumer Reports hasn't done a full-blown comparison of phones in quite a while, but they rate Verizon service the best. I have a Motorola Bionic that's a bit heavy compared to new models, but it's a workhorse that I'm hanging onto as long as possible. We found replacement batteries online a while back, so I carry a spare whenever I'm out.

Good luck finding what you want.
That's another vote for Motorla, Bbird. Now you can add my vote too. I am more familiar with Motorola products - from pagers to 800 radios to cell phones, and have always found them to be rugged and reliable. I like the "workhorse" term that cvb42jeb used.

I've never had an HTC phone, and have noted in years past that consumers seem to have trouble with apps on the HTC. However, that was years ago - and for cell phones, generations ago.

Bbird, if you can get what you need on the cheap as a doofer, I say grab it. That will buy you some time while you (we) do more research.

My Motorola Razr flip phone lasted me five years.

I'm a fan of the more rugged phones too. I was looking at the new Samsung Rugby, it seems to be pretty durable. My husband had the older flip version and it still works perfectly.

I need a smartphone, as I do shops on my way home from work. I like to be able to check emails to see if anything has changed. Guidelines, scenarios, postponements. Those have been happening a lot.

I also have a lot of money-making apps on my phone and would hate to miss out on them.

I keep coming back to the Droid 4 as my holdover until I find something better. My main problem is that I am just not technically-inclined when it comes to computers, tablets, and phones. As long as it does what I want it to, which honestly isn't much, I'm happy. I'm looking at all these phones online and getting so confused because they all seem the same to me, but one gets rave reviews and the other doesn't.

Leave verizon for starters...

Buy a galaxy centura for $50 brand new (it's a smartphone and yes that's the correct price for a brand new smartphone)

I paid $50 at family dollar

$40 on amazon
[www.amazon.com]

Transfer in old number

Activate it on a pay as u go carrier for unlimited talk, text, n web for $50 a month

Buy yourself something nice w the $$ u b saving...

The grandfathering thing is actually worthless as Verizon slows down unlimited users contract or not

That's about $6 more than I pay right now. My bill is like $43 and some change.

I am still grandfathered from Alltel (Verizon bought out Alltel, then sold about half to AT&T) and I have unlimited web, text, and 750 minutes, more than I use. Hell, I might even still have My Circle. I'm reluctant to leave this because... it's $44 a month.

I'm apparently grandfathered indefinitely on this plan as long as I don't change my plan (like "upgrading" my device/service agreement)... any changes I make like that, I lose my Alltel status and become a Verizon customer. And pay Verizon prices.

I'm not really sure what you mean about the grandfathering thing being worthless, as it doesn't have anything to do with throttling. The price I pay for what I get is something I don't want to lose.

That honestly doesn't concern me because I barely use my phone other than to check a few apps and email.

What I mean by worthless is you are staying in contract with a company that has already violated said contract

You are correct that it is cheaper but you are also frustrated by the thing you have to do to keep something you are already admitting you don't use often

If that is worth $7 a month saving than by all means that's good

The thing I'm most frustrated about is having to do so much research before buying a phone outright. I'd still have to do that with a pay-as-you-go phone, right? It's overwhelming, looking at a million different phones that look exactly the same but aren't.

My husband's contract with AT&T is ending soon, I will have him look into the pay-as-you-go.

My main concern with leaving, even for a pay-as-you-go, if I found one cheaper, is the lack of stability. At least with this plan, I'm guaranteed this rate for as long as I keep it. With pay-as-you-go, they could jack the price between one month and the next, and there's nothing protecting you from them doing that, right?

I fully expect my electronics to fall apart.... Regardless of how much you pay the majority of a phone is plastic..whether you pay $600 or $50... And I'm pretty sure the same people make all phones... Even Apple uses sweatshops... To expect high quality from someone working for pennies is outlandish

A word to the wise is never buy an android phone that you can't remove the battery... Battery's lose charge therefore being able to replace them increases the lifespan of the phone....

and removing batteries is a very important part of the trouble shooting process

With pay as you go it's very easy to switch carriers creating competition which is the only way prices go down

And as pointed out verizon already violated contracts

I don't want to pay $600 for a phone, LOL. When I bought mine brand new almost three years ago, it was "new" then and I still only paid $200 on eBay for it. Unfortunately they haven't come out with much new stuff lately that's not exactly like mine, just the newest version. Reading the specs, I'm so confused on how they're better.

I'm looking at a used phone on eBay for $40. If someone doesn't recommend something spectacular, I will probably go with that one. I normally do a lot of smartphone shops and let the salespeople convince me on something, and then just buy on eBay. Dick move, maybe, but I figure I'm there for the shop, not to buy anyway. I'd have wasted their time regardless.

I agree about removable batteries. I've not turned up many in the past few days that have them, though.

I did find out that the reason for my phone's sudden battery-life degradation is that I bought a set of RapidCharge chargers (home and auto)... apparently they are really bad for your battery. Now I know.

Research is necessary as phones are increasingly integral to life whether it's your job or your family... Or entertainment

Fear in buying a junk phone is why I only buy very cheap phones w over 2.5 stars on walmart amazon cnet and carriers websites

Besides I often lose or break my phones ... I once bought a $250 phone out of pocket and left it in a cab within weeks...after that I stopped buying ones over $100

Everything is a risk

Shops are never wasting anyone's time as you are reviewing the sales process and the employee is paid by the hour

I meant milking them for easy-to-understand info, and then buying the phone they genuinely "sold" me on, just...not from them.
