Bad Weather Cancelling

I have a great paying shop to perform in 4 hrs. however it is storming like crazy outside, i.e., rain & lightening. This is my first shop with the MSC. The shop is 30 miles away and I'm not sure I feel comfortable driving that far in this wicked weather. I'm going to send them a comment right now but I have several more assignments with them in the coming weeks and don't want to lose them as a source of income. What would you do??

Give myself extra time to drive there unless there were flood warnings or tornado warnings.
Thunder & lightning storm is not valid reason to flake on shop unless it is outdoors shop. Like said above, allow extra time to drive. Make sure good tread on tires and brakes in good shape.
Your post was early. Most thunderstorms don't last all day so even if it is a large front, you should find breaks where it is just rain. As stated before, if flooding or a potential tornado is in the mix you can rethink the shop.

Catherine, I know this is too late to do you any good but for future reference - when I have a situation where I would prefer not to shop that day, I contact the scheduler and ask if they have any wiggle room. Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't. If they don't, I suck it up and get the shop done. Weather can be unpleasant, but getting to work in bad weather is the same problem for all of us. Unless your safety is endangered, don't even think about not going.

Thanks everyone. I made my way to the shop. I wouldn't flake out just because of weather but I do do a risk/reward analysis to determine if it's safe for me to go ahead with the shop. This was a church service so I wasn't able to re-schedule. Here in Minnesota, weather can be an issue at times. Give me a good ole blizzard anyday smiling smiley All's well. Happy shopping.
Some MSCs actually talk about bad weather and say to contact them. I've never been in that situation, but you could not get me out in a thunderstorm with lightning. It's too dangerous. I do watch and pay attention to the weather reports when choosing shops. It's one of the reasons I am wary of choosing shops too far out in terms of dates.
Summer for us brings rains--weatherman was mentioning tonight that thus far this year we have received 40"--and those summer rainstorms are almost always accompanied by thunder and lightning. We lose a few people each year to lightning strikes, but considering that virtually every day from June to October is likely to have a little thunderstorm at some point during the day, it is something you get used to and just work around.
Glad I don't live in one of those areas. We don't actually get a lot of thunderstorms and such, but it does happen from time to time. It's extra dangerous in a sense because folks around here aren't used to it all that much so there are a bunch of accidents.
You get used to it. For years I bought snow shovels and folks didn't drive so great in snow. Now I buy windshield wiper blades and watch the idiots who try to drive through flooded streets because they know no alternative way to get where they are going.

In my area, sometimes we get golf ball sized hail. During those days, I adjust around the weather, as my shops do not offset the hail damage + deductible. If I'm able to avoid, I'll do whatever I can, even if it means flaking on a shop.

I have a policy that any weather condition that closes, or would close or delay schools in any of the jurisdictions that I must pass through to do a shop will cause me to ask for a new shop date. To that I add local tornado warnings and flash flood warnings. (I live on a belt of land between two small streams that are prone to flash flooding when it rains heavily in the mountains NW of here, as well as when we get local flooding.)

Neither snow nor rain nor floods shall keep a mystery shopper from his/her appointed rounds.....sorry had to post that. lol
Definitely can't agree with MsNinja thunder and lightning are too trivial. I've been caught out in thunderstorms that became severe quickly. One was even close to home but close was still on the other side of the bridge across the Missouri River so there was no alternate route. Another had lightning narrowly missing my car which was on the side of the road since I could not see anything because the rain and wind was so strong. Thunderstorms often are a precursor for tornadoes. Even without a tornado, hail and blinding rain are things I wish on few people trying to travel.

Depends on the MSC. I have one contract which specifies that shoppers are NOT to perform shops in cases of severe weather, and thunderstorms are mentioned on the list of examples. Their feeling seems to be 'normal shoppers wouldn't do this', but I think they're underestimating how many people are willing to put up with a little thunder and lightning to complete certain tasks.
Well, seems the answers run the gamut. In my situation, it was early Sunday morning and I wasn't able to reach anyone at the MSC and I didn't see anything on their website about weather. A little bad weather is one thing, but a serious storm is something else altogether. I'm still not willing to put myself in a dangerous situation just to make $25.
Looks like all we had to do was have several people mention flash floods an, lordy, the creeks done rise! Had to reschedule a shop because both exits from my neighborhood were blocked. I don't mind thunder and lightning but moving water of unknown depth will stop me every time!
