Browser update scam

Be careful! I just clicked on a post on this website. Instead of the post I got an official-looking Mozilla Firefox page telling me the software needed an urgent update. I smelled a malware scam and exited out without clicking on anything.

A Google search for the topic revealed that there is indeed fake updates for both Firefox and Chrome.

Thanks for the heads up! FireFox updates when you open the browser. You might have some malware on your computer, as opposed to there being a problem with the site.

I'm familiar with the Firefox updating process and this was different. A scan of my computer showed no infected files.

Had the same problem with Chrome and Security Essentials. You have to be very careful and make sure the websites you use to install the browsers are legit. Microsoft has an article on this.
always use a good firewall to avoid such instances, I recommend you to use any Internet security solutions(not necessary to go with pad subscription ). Most of the browsers are by default configured for an automatic update so we don't need to manually download any updates.
I personally use comodo internet security configured with custom rulesets (so that I can see what is going through my internet connection, and able to block if any suspicious handshakes with my PC )
