Laptop keyboard

Who can help me...my laptop keyboard is stuck, no keys will press, can't write, do reports, accept jobs...OMG.
Does this mean I need a new computer. This month, I had major dental work, new brakes, flat tire (broke rim)
now this.....think it's Cosmo time.

Try disconnecting the cables and then reconnecting them. Try rebooting. If your keyboard is detached from your laptop, turn the keyboard upside down and shake it to dislodge anything caught under the keys. If your keyboard is part of the laptop, do NOT shake it!

You can get an external keyboard that connects with USB or wireless for under $30 (just did this shop 2 days ago)

Good luck.

Thanks, I have a laptop, keyboard is connected. I'll have to bring it in. I probably got food inside as I'm always eating when I'm reporting....sad smiley No one spends $$ like me, I swear I pay for the air I breathe.

Did you try turning the computer off? If you can, hold the power button down for a few seconds and that should turn it off. If it doesn't unplug the computer until the battery is drained to kill the power (longer, but same effect). Anyway, let the computer cool down a bit then turn it on again.
Also, as a friendly reminder, make a reboot flash drive anytime you get a computer and backup files regularly.(won't fix a stuck keyboard, but will help with a crash)

Yes, I always turn it off when not using. I'm wireless so not sure reboot will help. I think keys have to be lifted and stuff cleaned out, hate to pay for it.

I couldn't get my keyboard to turn on once so I turned it off, took all the cables off and turned it upside down. I turned it on again. Who knows??
Is it possible that you have disconnected/disabled your keyboard internally via the sticky keys options ( I realize it's a laptop) ? My honey suggests to try this -- hit your shift key quickly 5 or 6 times until you hear it beep. When the pop up appears, tell it "No". I know the keyboard isn't "working" right now, but he said to try to hit the shift key really fast 5-7 times as fast as you can and see if it beeps and the pop up appears.

Edited because I cannot seem to keep typos to a minimum today.

There's a feature on laptop keyboards you can accidentally turn on and off through the shift key/sticky key options. If you press the shift key 5-7 times really fast, it will pop up to ask you if you want to turn this feature on. When you tell it no, it should turn all changes off if you've accidentally disabled the keyboard somehow. Also try going into the device manager of your computer. Open the start menu, look for device manager, and select Keyboards. It should tell you if your keyboard is working properly or not. It won't diagnose it if something has gotten stuck in it, but it should tell you if it's gotten turned off or unplugged.

It's not turned off or unplugged, a few keys work, half don't. I'll check it out anyway.

You can also try a can of compressed air, or turning it upside down and knocking the bottom to get crumbs out. If you are gentle enough, you can lift some of the keys and pick crumbs out if you see them. But its easy to break them, so I would take caution. I've had my laptop 6 years and this what I do when the keys stick. It's usually pet hair or crumbs.
@jdickersonshops-------> crumbs are one thing; but @Irene_L.A. sounds like she has a full course meal under her keyboardgrinning smileygrinning smiley. "I probably got food inside as I'm always eating when I'm reporting...."
Dont know how much the fix is but if you get an estimate that is to much you can always pop the keys out one by one with butter knife or flat head screw driver. Hose em with air, then just super glue them back in. Worst case scenario is you have to buy another laptop.

Use a super glue with a brush. Works easier.

Pacific Geek is good with refurb laptops running at $130 or so... shipping is reasonable.

You can always lightly put saran wrap over top of the keyboard too before eating and working for next time. I wouldnt suggest wrapping all around because it will need an air flow.

It depends what the issue is.... If it's cause there's stuff stuck under the keys, you can DIY what clean out your laptop with a can of air and some tools. But if you're not comfortable, then I understand.

If THAT isn't working, there are ways around this and using an external keyboard, but that does take a little learning if you don't know what you're doing on what questions to ask and what to do to fix the issue.

As for getting a new computer because of this? Highly doubt it. A fix is just needed.
