What is your typing speed?

The average person types 38-40 words per minute. I can type on average 60-65 words per minute, sometimes 75 if I drink a lot of coffee. My best score on typeRacer is 93 WPM

TypeRacer is a typing game where you race other people in terms of typing speed. Let's see who is the fastest typer on this forum.grinning smiley

I am a trained transcriptionist and type about 90-95 wpm in a 5 minute session with 7 or less errors. There is another forum member who wrote she types 140 wpm.
I used to do about 70 wpm on a manual. Fifty years later, I'm finding, with Duputren's (sp?) Contracture in both my hands, I often don't have enough pressure when I hit a key if I'm going too fast. It causes me to have to backspace to put in the missing letter. Very frustrating, because it breaks my thought process up. To compensate, I purposely type at about 45-50 wpm.

Shopping up and down the Colorado Rocky Mountain front range.
Whatever my typing speed is, it is inclusive of the back space button.

Evaluating and mailing packages since 1994
On a good day 45, an a normal day about 35-40. And yes that is the adjusted score (figuring the corrections) So I would lose to pretty much the entire forum in Typeracer.
I was also considering my typing speed with headphones on, listening to spoken words. It might be different if I had to look at words and type them while reading. And when typing a narrative, I am much slower because I have to think about what I want to write and then might change it a bit after typing it. Or change it a lot.
It truly depends. If I am writing words out of my head, I can go much faster, whereas if I'm looking at a book or a text on a screen, I'll probably hit between 90-115. That's not a long term rate. On a speed round, I could clock close to 140ish for a single, one minute. There are people who can do a single, one minute speed of 200+ words per minute. If you get a chance, watch that on YouTube. It's like they are just floating over the keys. It's really a broad question as to how fast we type. Over the course of a few minutes to a half hour, I can hang around 75-100wpm long term. On a speed round, though, I just hit 134 adjusted for accuracy. Our typing speeds also change up a bit depending on the type of keyboard we are on. If I get on the typewriter, I might hit 40-50 words per minute because the ribbon will pop out. 0_o

This person is at 217 in a minute and the record is 360? [www.youtube.com]

Now, that's some speed typing!

ETA: There are different timings too. Five minutes will make a lot of difference in your speed, ten minutes even more, and so forth. There is also the issue of using numbers, punctuation, capitals, etc. The websites are a good estimate, but I'd probably adjust myself down to say confidently that I can type 100-110 with 97-99% accuracy. It can vary, too. If you're nervous, or being watched it will impact your typing. Music and noise slow me way down too!

Now, if ya want help on reports, a great piece of software is Dragon. It can help you talk to text and then you can just review for grammar or use grammarly or something. My grammar/writing get me a lot but Dragon speak & speedy typing is handy after a long day!

At one time I was in the 80-85 words a minute range. Last I checked it was around 50. I agree when typing narratives it can be irrelevant because we are actually composing rather than transcribing data.

Slow. I hunt and peck. I am jealous of you all. It took me one minute to get these three sentences out.
I just tested myself - 148 wpm before errors. Here is a sample of my typing. Noq is thr tine for all goof mem to conw tp thw ais of the coumtry. What do you think? Do I need more practice or am I OK?
I signed up at the website @DavePi gave above. My plan was to accept his challenge to a race. In my younger, faster days I could type 65 wpm. Now my speed is ~56. You win, Dave smiling smiley I can't come close to 93.
I'm sure Dave can't come close to 93 either. Haven't you noticed he is often full of shite?winking smiley

56 is still above average grinning smiley. If you hover over other people's profiles you'll see people with best scores of 100 while their average is much lower(60-70). Currently I average 63 [data.typeracer.com]

Definitely. Your one minute speed is no where near accurate of your average over time. The longer you type, the more it will average out. I put an average of 90 WPM on my resume because that's where I'm comfortable with my average being over a longer time period of a half hour. I've had a half dozen typing classes at school, whereas most people get one or two, and the rest is picked up from the sheer need/work.

I think i run a good 35 wpm with 85% accuracy. For reports.

If i am just writing or iming its much much higher...

Definitely the most used skill i learned at school was typing...

Yahoo games used to have something called "typer shark"... ypur destroyed sharks by writing the word on them. And if they touched you ...you died

I am actually quite a fast typist. When I was in high school typing class (MANY YEARS AGO) I was well over 100. I think I hit in the 130 range a few times. I imagine now on a real keyboard I could still do over 100. I just tested on my very hard to type on laptop keyboard. There were two words that caused my test to be 77 but most of the time it was around 90.

For all you fast typists, has anyone taken @DavePi up on his challenge to a race? He gave a link in the OP so you can check his speed. Who's game? smiling smiley My speed was about 45 wpm so I'm no challenge to him. :/
Did 3 races today.

Race # Speed Accuracy Place Date
227 73 WPM 97.1% 2/4 today
226 74 WPM 97.2% 3/5 today
225 73 WPM 94.4% 3/5 today

68 at my last test over the summer. I used to type around 90, I was a telephone operator and you couldn't meet the targets unless you could type like it was second nature. I still type faster when hearing something than when reading it. I go in about once a year and take a typing course to keep my typing skills fresh. Typing class is almost the only useful thing that I learned in High School. I never run across Calculus or Physics in my day to day life! LOL
