Interesting. Trader Joe's is one switching up things a lot and free samples of food and wine are rampant. The middle aisles of most stores not only contain more expensive items, they contain some of the least healthy items. Most of my shopping is around the outer perimeter, vegetables, meat/seafood counters, dairy and bakery. I'm definitely an auto pilot person who makes lists in the order items appear in the store and doesn't veer from the mission. Maybe it is because I shop frequently, most of the time a cart is unnecessary. Items go directly in my reusable shopping bags.

I pretty much know what I'll be buying and am in the stores often.....Living alone, I have no problem with what i need, usually going over limit shops provide, but i'm a good shopper, using my rewards coupons, and shopping Wednesday thru Sunday when all sales are in full force. I still go to Sprouts on my own, Oatmeal
this week is .49pd., I'm a sucker for a sale, but buy healthy. Love Foodnetwork....not the article.

I'm not feeling that. I'm not sure what the milk:sales pitch reference was.

I do most of my shopping at Aldi because the prices are amazing and the middle aisle is a treasure hunt.

Aldi was the first store where i noticed i couldn't turn around and exit after entering. Wegmans' [East coast chain] milk cases are as far from the front door as possible, but they also offer a refrigerated case by the registers for "dash in" items, i.e., milk eggs bread. Wegmans is huge, and places staples in multiple areas of the store so you dont have to backtrack. For instance fresh bananas are in produce and the cereal aisle.

They have free samples, but dont offer them willingly. The reps never look up from their empty cutting board. Too bad because i always buy whatever i sample- it's so easy to guilt- trip me.
Most don't know is that big grocery chains use subliminal messages that they play over the intercom so they buy more more more. As an alpha wolf I don't fall prey to such tactics and just watch the sheep(other customers) buy the peep's flavored oreos.

Peeps flavored Oreos? Are you serious??

DavePi, how is the Breakfast Wine?

I changed my approach to grocery shopping years ago, when bakery aromas greeted me outside the store. Willpower, schmillpower! Who could resist that sugary sweet suggestopedia and bypass the bakery?!?!? I still wonder if that trick was some clandestine plot to derail dieters and keep them on expensive plans unnecessarily... until some shareholder's kid had finished braces or college or something... But I swear, I am not a conspiracy theorist!

I bucked up and changed stores, found the oldie-but-goodie books about quantity cooking and freezing, and generally became a curmudgeon. For my next trick, I will learn canning and preserving. Until then, my best trick is to work just enough to augment the income and not sacrifice good deals. When I am too busy, I am unavailable for money savers. At that point, we don't get the best deals, the budget springs a leak, and it is time to recalibrate the domestic system.

Is that how you turn water into wine?

YES! I experienced that with Aldi, too!! However, they have remodeled the older stores in my area, and that is no longer an issue. The newer stores they built in my area were built so that you can go in and out without going through the maze of aisles!! I'm glad they changed that!
