Airplane mode is while you are on an airplane, connects to their wireless.
Wrong airplane mode means that the device will not emit any signals at all so as not to interfere with the electronics of the plane.
Which is a big crock of donkey dung. If the electronics on the plane were that easy to interfere with then someone could easily cause a plane malfunction. The ACTUAL reason is a bit harder to explain and way more boring.
When you are on a plane way up in the sky, the cell tower is way way way away from you. Let's say you have 200 phones on this plane amongst all the passengers. They all are boosting their power to try to reach that tower way way way below. With 200 phones BARELY pinging the single tower the tower goes OMG THERE ARE PHONES THAT NEED ME! And it boosts power in that direction. Well it only has soooo much power so if it's boosts it straight up, where the plane is, it has to take power from the horizontal directions. Meaning people on the ground have to be closer to the tower to get a clear signal. So that's the REAL reason they don't want all the phones on the plane turned on.
Also if you don't put it on airplane mode your phone will boost power trying to find a signal for the whole flight and be dead when you arrive at your destination.
Also also people who talk on phones on planes are jerkfaces and rude. Almost as rude as people who bring meals on planes. Because you know what, your salad stinks and is messy and it's not like I can walk away from it.
