Selling from your home..

Has anyone had experience in selling items in their house and having people come over to view. I joined a group in my town as I want to get rid of some stuff in my garage, paintings I've had and no longer use. I had one person come over and buy two paintings....she then wanted a limited edition of a hand painted signed piece of work from a popular Artist (hanging in my home that isn't for sale). I was offered 100.00 and the work is worth 2,000. I told her it was not advertised and is NOT for sale (in those terms). She keeps calling and the Question is, how do I get rid of her?

Use caller ID to ignore the calls or block her. A smart phone usually has a way to block callers in the general settings. Going forward my suggestion would be to have any items for the sale in the garage and not allow anyone inside your home.

Tell her you'll sell it for a ridiculous amount like $10,000, and that the price isn't negotiable!
That's a way better idea than mine!

I did block her, seem to have stopped. I also had a bedroom Armoire for sale, and it was upstairs. I have no way of moving it....guess I won't sell it.

Hey, maybe she is willing to pay $10,000, you should say $20,000. Have her bring the price down. smileys with beer
Maybe one of the strong men in the group will bring that armoire down to the garage.

I was mentioning this to the spouse and he commented you should keep the person's details in case anything untoward happens regarding the painting. He also suggested having a couple of strongmen move the armoire down to the garage

I have blocked her from my Facebook, phone and getting in touch with me. She works for one of my Dr's, so, I think it's over. I have no one to carry the Armoire down three flights, it' very heavy....just won't sell it. Your husband is right, I thought of that, but not worried now. My Homeowner's has a community garage sale in Oct. with our Security available, so I'll wait till then. What do people that use Craig's list do?

I don't understand about the armoire. Are you saying that because you cannot move it you will be unable to sell it? Are you saying that you will not sell it at all/have decided not to sell? If so, here is an idea. Can the armoire be taken downstairs in pieces and reconstructed? Some charities will pick up donated furniture-- if their employees can move it safely.

When I sell on Craig's list I agree to meet the buyer at a local diner where I am well known and can observe the parking lot from inside. I accept no bills over $20 denomination. After the transaction is complete, someone from the diner watches me walk to my car and depart safely. Never had any hint of a problem when I did that. When selling larger objects, I have a neighbor come to be with me during the transaction so that I am not home alone.

Unless it is a close friend or neighbor purchasing the armoire, I'd be worried that someone who has come to my house then knows what's inside my house and where I live. If you have many valuable things and live alone this could make you apprehensive.

Ugh. Craig's list is scary! You neighborhood thing with security sounds way safer.

Yes, Craigs list is scary, I would never use them, just curious as to who has, hope i didn't give the
impression that I ever would. My home has security patrol every two hours and I am in an excellent
area, safety has always been #1. We have no parking without a permit. This woman works for my Dr., would never break into my home and literally steal, plus I have an alarm system....not to overthink this, it was what it was. Everyone is vulnerable, homes get broken into everyday, I have nice stuff, but not worthy of some homes here in L.A..

Now I'm just being nosy...why would you pay to have a security patrol go past your house every two hours if you live in an excellent area?

My Armoire cannot be taken apart, all in one piece and extremely heavy, takes a movers dolly + I live in a tri-level,no way I can move it, so unless I allow people in my house to view and move it, no, won't sell it until I get it moved to the garage. I'll end up paying a mover to bring it down stairs. Can't get clearer than that...smiling smiley

I live in a Townhouse development, it is included in our homeowners, and you know good areas are the ones broken into......they were going to gate property, but zoning laws prevented that, so went this route.

I use craigslist all the time and have only once had a questionable "ordeal". I was going to look at a vehicle and everything seemed off about the location. I got out of there pronto and will always trust my instincts in situations like this. Besides having tons of people who just don't show up (flakes), I have met some outstanding folks through craigslist.

Irene - If you are interested in a tax write-off, you could call Goodwill and ask if they'll go upstairs and take it. You could also call around to legitimate local churches or charities to see if they'll do the same. I've done that before and they come inside, disassemble and do all the work. I've done this many times.

I have given a lot to Salvation Army who does pick things up, but none come into your house...has to be in the garage. Just wanted to SELL it and get something smaller, don't need a tax writeoff at this point, hardly working.

My daughter just moved out of a second floor apartment. There were a few things she didn't want to take to her new place. Her first plan of attack was to post a notice in her complex. She advertised what she had and what the prices were. That worked pretty good. She had good luck with what was left (donation) with Habitat for Humanity and Salvation Army. It just depended on the crew who showed up whether they would schlep furniture downstairs.

I've had good luck selling on eBay. Probably not a good example for your furniture though. I've previously sold things on local FB garage sale sites but you get a lot of no-shows and weirdos so I stopped having people come over. I started meeting them at a local gas station (inside) and only use my cell number so that I can block them. But then this last time they just called from different numbers. It's a dicey game. I'll stick with eBay.
I'm certainly not giving it away, worth a lot of $$....I'll put a note on the community board, but not selling if I don't get what it's worth. Don't want strangers in my house, keeping it in the complex makes sense...thx Mert.
No Craig's list or Ebay.....

I would say just be careful. My daughter sold her car at her brother's place of business in the daytime. However, he had allowed someone to sell their car on his property next to his shop. It was nighttime and the son of the seller was not only robbed of his car but his clothes. He came to our shop and called his father. We just happened to be there at nighttime. My kids do get good deals at Craiglist all the time.
