Should you ever ask how much someone makes....

Actually the OP of this thread did ask how we felt about someone asking how much we make. It is the subject line.

If anyone doesn't appreciate or understand sarcasm, this post sounds brutal! For the record, it was said in jest. A gibe between two friends who regularly needle each other.

Therein lies the problem. Irene was the OP of this thread and several of us were responding to her post. I think spicy may be responding to jainsuchi, who was the OP on another thread. jainsuchi followed Irene here to argue, even after telling others "if you don't like a question, feel free to not answer." So how does it make any sense that jainsuchi didn't like this topic but felt free to jump in with arguments? Not very positive, right?

I agree that "Instead, why don't people just respond to posts they feel positively about?" But everybody has a right to post and express an opinion. jainsuchi has a right to post a question that some found rude and others did not. Irene had a right to start a thread discussing questions. jainsuchi had a right to jump in make a less than positive argument to Irene's question. Others of us had a right to express opinions, and spicy has a right to argue that others should not post if they don't have a positive response, even though her responses to the OP's question are not positive. We all even have the right to tell others not to express themselves while expressing ourselves.

This is not going to change. Repetitive questions are going to continue. Repetitive responses are going to continue. And some people are always looking for a fight so they happily jump in to start a war.

shouldnt friendly jabbing be done in private. new members probably wont know history b/t members or understand public jabbing. op of this thread on purpose started this thread to attack op of other thread who is new member. now new member is leaving. real positive contribution to forum there.

Sorry but Irene is not innocent she has jumped on me in different threads on a similar subject and blatantly posted untruths. Straight out claimed I was a liar. She's not nice about it either. so much for the positive posting mantra you claim she has.
WOW....I lie really...maybe perception is wrong as happens on internet. I have nothing against you!!
Good to find out truths. i'll be sure to stay away from your posts.

What mantra are you attributing to Irene? My comments addressed everyone who posted. You are jumping in to take the opportunity of a fight to drag up old grudges so you can bash Irene. Attacking Irene about something totally unrelated to this thread is exactly what spicy was talking about. And it's what I'm talking about. Anybody else you want to attack?
And quoting me for simply pointing out which thread this was was unnecessary. I really wish people would limit quoting in general and do it correctly when they must.

I grew up with the mindset that you don't ask people what they earn. But certainly before I chose my career, I learned what the various professions paid. So, it was never a well kept secret to at least find out ball park figures.

I am a teacher and our salaries along with many other salaries are public. We all know which jobs pay minimum wage, and what that wage is, so more easily accessible earning info.

So, not a big deal really.

ive no idea if irene has called me a liar but she has jumped on me. really just a grain of salt in life. she is positive to herself but ive seen hurricane irene blow in.
Wow, what a lengthy conversation over pay. I make decent money and what difference does it matter if he, she, we, they or you knows how much I make.
I have not been attacked by anyone but I have noticed that when there is drama, Irene is most often involved. I don't care if people ask me about how much money can be made, I just answer if I want to or leave it alone.
I don't see anything rude about asking how much someone makes from mystery shopping. Answer if you feel like it and add as much info as you like.

As for knowing my children's salaries, you can bet I know. That's without asking. Voluntary info just because.....
