When you can't sleep...

The crazy old lady brain looks up old Sesame Street songs, when she babysat the neighbor kids.

I found the rubber ducky song! Trying to find the original manamana song was a little more difficult, but I found it!

I am lucky I usually can sleep, hit the pillow and wake at 7:30AM. When I can't sleep, say 1 in the morning i go downstairs and watch the Jeff Corbin show then a comedy show go back to bed around 2ish and I'm out like a light sleeping an extra hour.

I've also found some light comedy to be helpful on sleepless nightssmiling smiley

Diphenhydramine (generic for Benedryl). Works like a charm and I am not groggy in the morning.
Not for me. Antihistamines will keep me awake and hyper for days.

Nope. Just someone who has a lot of issues with various medications. The newer antibiotic only requiring three days make me sicker than a dog as do a lot of pain meds.

That sucks. I hope I didn't come off as rude by asking that. I know that some people with ADD get calmer with caffeine or other stimulants and things that normally suppress the CNS make them wired, so that's why I asked.
Not at all. I have heard of that opposite reaction. In my case it just appears pharmaceuticals and I don't play well togethersmiling smiley

I hate pain meds, I can't do the recommended dosage or I pass out nearly immediately, so I get that (sans nausea). And some antibiotics also make me miserable and WILL make me puke. I try to go for natural remedies whenever possible. I did find years ago that melatonin worked well for sleep issues but I haven't tried that in awhile.
Sleepy Time tea works as does the old warm milk trick. And then there is always wine or better yet, portsmiling smiley

I cut back on mystery shopping and stay home most of the time. At home, I sleep when I need to sleep. This works well for me. I no longer work through tiredness and/or bedtime and then become too alert to sleep. I do not recommend this for anyone else.

LisaSTL, yes, I understand about different reactions from different meds. The medication I take now to keep my estrogen G-O-N-E so that my breast cancer doesn't come back (hopefully) reacts in SOME people by messing with their sleep patterns....I am one of those! Some nights I can go to bed by 12:30 or 1 am. Other nights, when I know I SHOULD be asleep, it's near 3 am!! So what I usually do, whether it's 1 am or 3 am, is plug in the earbuds to my cell phone while it's charging by my bedside, and find some good ol' Lux Radio Theater on Youtube, and listen to the rebroadcasts of classic, well-known movies done for radio. I'm usually asleep within 30 minutes then.
I try and not take meds of any sort continual usage causes many side effects. I take 2 pills a day prescribed.
nothing to sleep or for pain. Putting those bloody drops in my eyes keeps me busy enough, but helps 100%.
I know Melatonin calms the brain and is natural. I do think sleep is important for good health so boys and girls, get your 7 hours in......sweet dreams....

I have a two step process for sleepless nights. First, I turn on the bedside radio (our NPR station broadcasts the BBC overnight, and the British accents often lull me back to sleep). If that doesn't work, I go downstairs with my pillow, lay on the couch, and turn on the TV. Without my glasses on I'm blind as a bat, and the white noise of whatever show I turn on is magically sleep inducing.

Happiness is not a goal; it is a by-product. Eleanor Roosevelt
I use the Melatonin from Trader Joes. It is low dose and chewable. I also have a scent diffuser that I put essential oils into for a restfull sleep. Got it on Amazon for about $9.00 and totally love it.
I don't know why, but I just can't do as well with 7 hours or less, I do much better on 8 or more. Of course it depends on what I am doing the next day. If I am traveling or working a long day on a merchandising reset, I need more sleep. My mom could always get by with 5 hours or so. I don't know how she did it and remained so cheerful.

In my "younger" days (late 30s - 50ish), I could stay up till 2 or 3 then sleep 4-5 hours and be up again, ready to go. NOT NOW! I don't do well with less than 7 hrs either, and usually, I feel GREAT if I can get in 8.5 - 9 hours! So if I'm up till 1 or 2 and sleep till 9:30 or 10, that's no different than hubby going to bed at 10 or 11 and getting up at 7:30. But he thinks somehow his sleep habits make more sense than mine.....yet WHO is taking the nap in the middle of the day.....EVERY day???? Not me!!! Once I'm up, I'm usually good to go till I'm sleepy again around 1 or 2. I think better at night, and generally feel better as the day goes on. Weird, but that's how it is!
I came across this article on Epicurious and thought it fit the discussion.

Interesting article. I didn't realize so many foods had melatonin or compounds that help the body make melatonin! However, I noticed that potato chips & pretzels weren't on that list....darn!! haha!!
The article is interesting, but if I eat anything late at night I gain weight. I stop eating after 7ish. Lately have been drinking "Gold Peak diet-tea', taste's great and helps weight loss.

From what I read many of the foods were not necessary right before bed. The study about salmon just said people eating it three times a week reported better sleep overall. Others like the strawberries or almonds were not specific about the when, but they were relatively small amounts.

Oh good, I do eat above foods maybe that's why I sleep well...thought they were meant before bed to help you sleep. I eat fruits, but now unable to eat nuts or popcorn, which puts a change in my diet.....I think food has more meaning for our health than we realized.

I stayed in bed until noon today. I was awake at 5:45am (I get up at 5:35 for work), but I stayed in bed and napped off and on.
