Definitely tile or, preferably, wood. You don't have to replace those in 10 years.

I like wood throughout the house with area rugs for the comfort and warmth. I can certainly understand wanting carpet in second floor bedrooms because of the noise reduction.

Ninja I actually agree with you on this one. i want to rip my carpets out and continue putting wood floors throughout my house. I have them in my downstairs, but carpeted stairs and bedrooms..very old-fashioned look.
I love the look of wood, have really nice European tiles in the bathrooms and kitchen. Will have to get a lot of pretzel shops....

Definitely wood. We got the whole house done by Luna at a great rate. The previous owner had carpet. Easy to clean. Gives an illusion of more space. I saw a great article on how carpets are responsible for a number of health problems.
I think my eye allergies are from the carpets. Doing the stairs is so costly or I would do it. I had wood floors throughout my big house and yes,easy to clean. My ex was a developer and did things right. He went to the
place that made floors for bowling alleys and had them custom made. I said I'd never go back to carpets after that house, but the cost was prohibiting.

Wood has been much cleaner for us. I can sweep, mop, steam, and if I wanna -- even vacuum it without issue. I get up more dirt and I sneeze less. Fleas are also less of an issue. I treat the furbabies and such but with carpet, they got in and wouldn't leave! I have a couple of area rugs in various places for the cats to snuggle in (it helps trap their hair and keep it from floating about).

I have carpet in my bedroom now and like it for comfort and warmth. Lisa had a good idea about wood with area rugs. My allergist prefers that I have wood because I am allergic to dust and wood can be cleaned better than carpet.

Carpet is fine as long as it is not shag and matches the drapes. Bare floors with area rugs are always preferable.

I would prefer hard floors for several reasons. I have not decided whether I must have a solid wood product or a wood product. (This is because I have forgotten exactly what the top-notch salesperson told me about wood v. high quality wood somethings such as composites, or something.) The hard floors can be cleaned almost silently and with items that usually cost less than noisy vacuum cleaners. This is important for people who live in close quarters or work at night. These people cannot vacuum at random or during typical quiet times without disturbing other residents or nearby neighbors. However, they can clean their floors silently with dust mops or brooms at any time without bothering anyone else. The hard floors already are or can be stained to blend with my preferred decor. Some woods are extremely durable. Some flooring products do not buckle or expand/contract, so they never experience gaps that can capture dirt, dust, or liquids. As stated earlier, I need to consult my customer product kit to find out which flooring does not buckle and does not capture crud in gaps. (can you say, shop-et-al learned a lot from her flooring shop?)

i like carpet in bedrooms, and upstairs. That being said, when we finally have to replace the carpet which only exists upstairs in our house, we will probably just get the existing wood floors refinished. Why anyone would cover these gorgeous floors with carpet is beyond me. However, I like the ease of vacuuming as opposed to mopping acres of wood floors.
CQ, I got one of those steam cleaners for the hardwood and tile. It works as easily as a vacuum so there is no need for a bucket of water and nothing to dump out after. It is still a two step process with vacuuming or dust mopping first.

Wood with a throw rug. I'll never go back to carpet. (okay, so I have a cat that upchucks periodically, which makes it a o brainer)

I was trying to give my old cat some credit. Suffice it to say I have very clean floors and occasionally visit Ross for new throw rugs. My other cat just does periodic hairballs. I also repeat everyday: "I love my cats..."

My kids, grown and out, have big dogs that we regularly babysit. We have a long, angular, ranch-style house. The dogs rip and tear through the house, when they get excited. They slip and slide, and their claws do a number on the hardwoods, when they turn a corner. I have carpet in the bedrooms. When our two cats rip and tear, they do a number on the carpet. When our kids were growing up, they were hard on the carpet in their rooms. Our house is lived in and enjoyed, dents, dings, scratches, and upchucks. Not a showplace, but home.
Ninja, I guess it depends on if you live with your parents. If you live on your own there should be nothing to fight about on that one, and you can tell them I said so!!!!

Carpet. DH is itching to rip it out. We had carpeting in all the bedrooms and hardwood floors and tile throughout. Last 2 years, all but our bedroom were ripped off carpeting. I must say the carpets preserved those beautiful hardwood floors. I keep telling him soon.
