Ninja, I guess it depends on if you live with your parents. If you live on your own there should be nothing to fight about on that one, and you can tell them I said so!!!!.

You know when I first saw the title of the thread I was wondering if it was going to be something naughty.
u wish it was naughty. maybe u could start new thread called who do u prefer in bedroom.

Nah, not really interested in who other people want in the bedroom, and I am happily married (and monogomous). Just a funny title, that's all.

Carpet is fine as long as it is not shag and matches the drapes. Bare floors with area rugs are always preferable.

Definitely wood, cement or stone. I've seen some stained concrete with beautiful results. I used to like carpet in bedrooms until I pulled some up one day to replace and saw what it looked like, even with regular cleaning. Plus it helped my allergies.
I love stained concrete. When I remodeled my old house I wanted to put concrete countertops in.

Whenever I sweep my floors (I have 100% hardwood throughout house) I reaffirm to myself that I will never have carpet again. Granted I have two dogs. I have a huge pile of dirt, hair, etc. when I sweep into a pile. It would gross you out to know there was that much dirt in your carpet. Carpet is dirty and nasty cause you can't ever really clean it. You can easily change the appearance/color scheme of your home by changing the throw rugs.

Carpet has unequaled noise absorbing qualities. I have the bedrooms on 2nd floor of my home carpeted for that reason, but I've had a basement guest report that he can hear everything that happens on the main floor above, which is a wood floor. You may want to carpet your bedroom for noise reduction.
In my dream house, which requires a miracle, there will be no one within earshot. There also won't be anything happening that would interest anyone else. Boring old bags who read real books are pretty dull.

CQ, I got one of those steam cleaners for the hardwood and tile. It works as easily as a vacuum so there is no need for a bucket of water and nothing to dump out after. It is still a two step process with vacuuming or dust mopping first.

Just a word of advice when it comes to steam cleaning on wood. Depending on the kind of wood you have, putting excessive heat can damage the wood in the long run.

To change the subject. We have a water bed, I have had one for 40 years, mattress needs updating every 10 years. They make them with baffles so that you don't get the old type of bouncing. We wake up every day and say, "This bed is so comfortable I hate to get up." When I was younger my neck and should would be in pain, lots of pain. Once we got a waterbed, pain went away forever.
I have carpeting, would prefer hardwood, to much work to move, drain water bed.

Ironic isn't it - that bare floors were once considered "old fashioned" - therefore the carpeting explosion of the mid-century (presumably your parent's era?). Everything old is new again ...

No doubt. It's like how granite is now considered 'old fashioned' and quartz is the modern material.

As a Realtor, I would have to say that carpet in the BR is the preferred flooring, at least where it gets cold. But hardwood floors are a close second. Tile in a BR is preferred near the beach or lake, but not really anywhere else. It's a balance of choices for yourself vs. future resale!

Here in L.A. many are putting in tile pavers throughout. I love wood floors and did my living room in wood, but have carpeted my upstair bedrooms, I do like the warmth of a carpet but the look of wood which opens a room making it look larger, we were the first to put wood throughout in the home we built for ourselves with a great area rug in front of the fire place. No one had tile pavers except in the bathroom and kitchen, you don't want wood in the kitchen due to water damage. I no longer like carpet, not remodeling anytime soon. Many choices today., if I could, I'd do my whole house, stairs and all in wood., with bathrooms (as I have them) in imported tiles and kitchen heavy pavers.
For resale wood works.....

I don't like tile in the kitchen for two reasons. It is hard to stand on for a long period of time and I cook a lot. Since I also tend to drop things a lot, I would spend a fortune replacing all sorts of broken stuff, LOL.

LisaSTL...what flooring do you have in your kitchen? I drop stuff but nothing ever breaks and easy to clean up.
You are in the kitchen more than I am, I'm in for shorter times throughout the day.

Friends have Pergo, don't know how long it lasts compared to real wood..but it has a nice look,

I don't know how long it lasts either, but offhand it seems like it was installed at least 17 years ago, maybe 20. It was before my time. I scoffed at the product until seeing it for myself.

It is a good alternative, if it has a long life, worth the savings.

I love Pergot (I have a friend who has it) and how it muffles the sound compared to actual wood flooring, which also can be squeaky. It's also quite beautiful. We grew up in a house with wood floors and I remember my mother walking in heels and how loud it was, and also how easily it was to damage (no skateboarding in the house, kids!. I have tile in my kitchen and other areas (no one walks with shoes but I am sure it would be loud), but I wear my croc slippers while I cook and I also have those mats in front of the stove in sink because damned if standing on tile is not horrible on the back! I think Pergot seems softer.
Funny you say that about the sound. I was impressed because it has that sound of walking on hardwood lending to the illusion. The way my kitchen is laid out a mat in front of the stove would interfere with traffic.

My deal is I have real wood floors downstairs and don't want a mix and matching with woods....if I can't do it right not doing it, carpets are better for me than different types and colors of woods....
