Hello October!

1. Cool crisp weather after a blazing, humid summer.
2. Boots, sweaters, fleece pajamas make an appearance.
3. The trees decide they are setting suns.
4. Leaves crunching underfoot.
5. Apples, which leads to my favorite, apple cake.
6. Halloween, lots of tots in adorable costumes and candy. What's not to like?

It's my favorite month of the year. It's all downhill after October.

Agreed, yes for Oct....except Halloween (least favorite), lock the door, kids go to the big house's, got lucky there. Weather the best, flowers blooming, love my sweaters, boots, scarfs...homemade soups. Maybe with my daughter this holiday season.
YES and YES.

CQ, My mom had an awesome recipe for apple cake! I think I have it somewhere....now that your mentioning it has put me in the mood for some!
Want to post the recipe? I'm always trying new ones. Last year I made an apple cake and then I made a caramel type syrup topping and poked holes in the cake and just poured it over it. OMG yum. I can never make that again.
There is even a recipe thread if you want to post it!

I wish it was cool and crisp here. Instead, the temperature's back up to the mid-80s during the day :-(

Can't wait for it to get cool and STAY cool!

Not me. It can stay like this until spring and I will be a happy camper.

Never try to teach a pig to sing. It's a waste of your time and it really annoys the pig.
I am a spring/early fall baby. I love it when it's high 70s very low 80s, though I do enjoy mid 50s weather at night for sleeping smiling smiley Not a fan of extreme heat or cold. And to hell with wearing "real" shoes or boots, I will take sandals or flip flops anyday. But I will take some apple cake, please.
I'm with you, I wish May and October could last forever. Still in sandals and I'm in New England. (no socks, puuuulease!)
Yesterday, it snowed here. I missed most of the storm when I was south of the border and it just rained hard all day. In other October news, eggnog is not just for Christmas anymore. You can now buy it in cute little themed boxes with pumpkins on them. (I now expect that we will see eggnog all year long, in cute little themed containers with bunnies, turkeys, hearts, flags, ships, and whatnot on them.) Eggnog is too sweet to serve with apple cake. I am guessing that coffee goes well with the apple cake...

Two things I'm not a fan of would be pumpkin and eggnog.....and since we celebrate Channakah with potato latkes, don't care about the other (Halloween/xmas) foods. I have seen the eggnog drinks in Whole Foods, nothing new there.

im w/irene on pumpkin & eggnog & cant stand either one. love halloween but i dont eat candy. i like potato latkes when cooked right.
I used to always make the best latkes, the past two years with my hands hurting, the grating potato's are a job. I found a decent subsitude at Trader Joe's, their frozen latkes are worth a try, also their frozen cheese blinze's are really good.

I hate pumpkin and eggnog as well. Rates on same level as yams, sweet potatoes, cottage cheese and liver.
I like pumpkin okay, although pumpkin pie is not up there with blackberry or cherry. It's really the spices that make it good. But I love sweet potatoes and yams. Not a fan of eggnog. It may be the name and the thickness that puts me off. Ugh.
Last year I made home made pumpkin pie spice for my coffee because the store stuff has so many weird ingredients. It was okay I guess, I'd do it differently if I were going to do it again. There are plenty of recipes on the web so buying seems silly.
Plain, baked sweet potatoes and yams are good for me. I love them! I am not a fan of canned and "candied" versions of perfectly lovely spuds. My beloved sweets and yams are naturally lovely, in their earthy and orange-ish way. Long live the natural beauty!

October is wonderful here because (usually) the early mornings are cold but not freezing, the roads are clear, and the natural landscape is picturesque.

After a 3 week total drought we have pelting rain and August-like temperatures. Where did October go?

We are having days of rain but today is a rather overcast off day. I'm hoping October weather returns before winter!
Fabulous days until Sunday when it's going back up to 90%, since we had 110% all summer, can't complain, has been beautiful....brisk with sun shining favorite time of year.

I love, love, love October! It's my daughter's birthday (29th). I love pumpkin spice anything. I love cooler weather. I love decorating for Halloween. My youngest child is still young enough to trick-or-treat, which is fun. And around October is when I start Christmas shopping - I usually have it all done by Thanksgiving.
