My family fought in wars too and came home to a country that would not acknowledge them as citizens. In spite of this, they passed down to us respect for principles and the constitution for which they fought. They fought for the second amendment right to carry arms, regardless of how their descendants feel about guns. They fought for the right to peacefully demonstrate, which is what the some professional players are doing. Heck, prior to 2009, NFL teams stayed in the locker rooms until AFTER the anthem. The players are NOT protesting a flag. If you look at some of the players kneeling, they have their hand over their hearts, which shows respect for the flag. In fact, they kneel because a Green Beret war veteran had a discussion with the original protestor and asked him NOT to sit during the anthem. They BOTH agreed that kneeling would allow him to bring attention to the issue while showing some resect for the flag. The Green Beret felt that kneeling, by definition, is associated with reverence. The kneelers have succeeded in PEACEFULLY bringing attention to a serious and deadly issue within our country. Whether you support the demonstration and the players rights or whether you support the idea that everyone must stand as a sign of respect for the flag, I hope you see beyond this and look at the issue that it all represents.
