Well, I'm rooting against the Yanks but if/when they lose I'll have no one to root against. I'll kind of root for the Cleveland Indians then. Yes, I'm a Mets fan (as well as the 0-5 NY Giants in football). Although I have ramped down my NFL football watching this year. Reason obvious.
Its ok you're a mets fan, i won't hold that against you. If the mets had only traded jay bruce to the yanks...
I love the Rockies too. I even went to the Wild Card game since I live in the Phoenix area. But I was a Cub fan before the Rockies existed. So go CUBBIES. Next year Rockies vs Cubs NLCS!!!!

With mixed emotions I am still watching and rooting against the Yanks. I'll watch no matter who makes it to the World Series. It's the NFL that I am basically boycotting. I knell for the cross and stand for the National Anthem. I fought for this country, respect our flag and am grateful that I live here.
Nothing I can do to stop you from bringing politics up in my thread. But I started this thread as a distraction from politics. I would appreciate it if people would keep politics out of it and stick to just Baseball.

My "rules" are pretty simple. Talk about baseball particularly the playoffs. Obviously I can't enforce my rules but I can certainly ask to keep politics out of it. There was enough strife in another thread that ended up having it closed. I'd like this one to last at least until a week or so after the World Series ends. So let's play nice.

I live four blocks from Wrigley, so I’m a Cubs fans whether I want to be or not lol. Go Cubbies!!!
Starting a thread makes it public property, so this is not the OP's thread and her preferences do not apply. The forum owner's rules are the only ones recognized here. I also am not a fan of political discussions, but, since the forum owner has not outlawed discussion of politics, and since this is General Chat, political comments can be made in this thread or any other General Chat thread. The forum owner also has not outlawed baseball discussions, so baseball discussions are also valid. Note to OP, it's fine to start threads, but realize you can't limit the comments of other forum members and they are free to post whatever they choose within the rules of the forum.
Patriotism is a completely separate thing to me from political. I don't identify with a political party, but I am a patriot. Regardless of who is president and what bill congress is trying to pass, I am an American and I'm proud of it. I might protest about my country's political choices at some time or other. In fact, I have joined protests. But disrespecting the flag and our national anthem is shameful. I'm with you, Jake. I'm boycotting them, too. And anybody who sees comments expressing angst over public disrespect of our country as political is telling us we can't be proud of our country.
My family fought in wars too and came home to a country that would not acknowledge them as citizens. In spite of this, they passed down to us respect for principles and the constitution for which they fought. They fought for the second amendment right to carry arms, regardless of how their descendants feel about guns. They fought for the right to peacefully demonstrate, which is what the some professional players are doing. Heck, prior to 2009, NFL teams stayed in the locker rooms until AFTER the anthem. The players are NOT protesting a flag. If you look at some of the players kneeling, they have their hand over their hearts, which shows respect for the flag. In fact, they kneel because a Green Beret war veteran had a discussion with the original protestor and asked him NOT to sit during the anthem. They BOTH agreed that kneeling would allow him to bring attention to the issue while showing some resect for the flag. The Green Beret felt that kneeling, by definition, is associated with reverence. The kneelers have succeeded in PEACEFULLY bringing attention to a serious and deadly issue within our country. Whether you support the demonstration and the players rights or whether you support the idea that everyone must stand as a sign of respect for the flag, I hope you see beyond this and look at the issue that it all represents.

Protest is enshrined in the constitution under the First Amendment. The one that actually came before the Second Amendment. One of my best friends served for 20 years. He is also the first to say he did it to defend the Constitution and supports all peaceful protest.. Kaepernick's protest has spanned two presidencies and is aimed at police violence targeting people of color.

Equal rights for others does not mean fewer rights for you. It's not pie.

Exactly. So, regardless of whether or not an individual supports the kneeling during the anthem or not, it has become a part of the sports arena. If we can discuss sports, there is no reason comments cannot be made about what the players do or do not do on the field.
I'm watching the Astros vs. Yankees now, and rooting for the Astros, only because they got Verlander from my beloved pussy cats. Super stand up guy and really nice in the few opportunities I have had to meet him. Wish he could have won one for the Tigers, but hope he gets one now. Really hope he wears the old English D into the hall of fame.

I would like to comment on my post. It was not intended to be, nor do I think it was, political. I believe in the 1st amendment and the 2nd amendment but neither has anything to do with my comment. There is a time and place to protest or voice your opinion over real or imagined injustices of this country. During the National Anthem is not the time nor the place. Too many people fought and too many died to keep Americans free and give us the right to voice our opinions. Just don't spit in the face of this country, our flag, our military and our National Anthem.
I give up. Discuss what you want. I'll enjoy the playoffs without the drama.

So much wrong and inconsistent with literally everything you said. But I’m done trying to educate people who don’t care about the plights of others because it doesn’t directly affect you.

Go Cubs!!

I think Jake makes perfect sense. He is not disagreeing that the players have the right to protest. He is also not disagreeing with what they are protesting. They have the right to protest. And their protest is legal. Jake also has the right to dislike the way they choose to protest. And he has the right to boycott the league because he is protesting the manner in which they chose to protest.

The plights of others might be a great thing to protest over. And Jake might support their protest. I certainly do, but I don't like the manner in which they have chosen to protest and it is my right and Jake's right to say so.
So protest, just do it the way you like it? Preferably somewhere where you don’t have to see it or acknowledge it?

I wonder if the kids sitting in at the diner in Greensboro were doing it the way that made everyone else comfortable? Doubt it. That’s the whole reason why protesting exists.

I’m done. Everyone has their opinions on this.
I believe in the first and second amendments. Only while on terms you agree with though. That right there is limiting free speech. Not a “time and a place”. That’s what makes it FREE.
