Is this why I haven't been sick for almost a year?

I came across some information about the immune system and that fiber helps give the good bacteria in your intestines(which accounts for half of your immune system) the energy it needs to ward off the bad bacteria. Fiber feeds these gut microbes that create the lining of your stomach. Inflammation occurs in your gut when there is little mucus lining your stomach/intestines. This past year, I've eaten oatmeal religiously, along with beans and other nutrient dense super foods, and I have not been sick once. I knew that eating healthy was improving my health, but I didn't really know the mechanics behind it.

I used to get colds quite easily in the past, every couple months or so. I used to eat a lot of refined sugars( which I learned is not good for your gut health) and very little fiber.

Just an interesting tidbit I learned and may be beneficial to those with chronic gut issues, inflammation and/or a suppressed immune system. Many of these chronic issues that Americans face is preventable and I am glad I learned about this at a fairly young age.

I do believe that gut health is optimal for the immune system. I take a good probiotic. I do a bit of fiber, though not as much as you probably do. I think a balance of the good bacteria to yeast ratio in the gut is most important.

I'd like to learn more about the "good bacteria to yeast ratio" Do you know any articles relating to that?

Not off the top of my head, but you can google it and get lots of hits I am sure. It's a common topic.

Also, leaky gut syndrome is directly related to inflammation. Different search topic than the previous one.
Yes, I wash my hands too. As a previous massage therapist and with training in various other health fields, and it's a common sense thing to do (and thoroughly and properly). However, someone with a weak immune system is more prone to picking up bacteria--and there is much more airborne bacteria than what gets on your hands from touching things.
Interesting documentary on Netflix. Forks over knives and In defence of food. Just saw them yesterday.
Bunk that DavePi. It's the Breakfast Wine that keeps you in optimal health!

A good documentary about obesity is "The weight of the nation" on Youtube.

A shocking fact that I learned is that obesity costs the country 150 billion in healthcare. And about half is paid for by taxpayer dollars through medicaid and medicare. Also it is crippling the workforce because so many are not fit to work. The future does not look good because the obesity rate is still growing.

I liked the discussion about food Vs food like edible things in the documentary. Fiber rich Stevia, Added Vitamins on prepackaged waffle, Now with extra protein Peanut butter?? @DavePi I was shocked too that the country is spending more on healthcare than on anything else. It's not education, military or welfare.

After watching that, I am going to switch from whey protein to a pea protein powder. I've already cut red meats from my diet because of its direct link to heart disease. In terms of longevity, a more plant based diet is going to be better in the long-term.

It amazed me how all the chronic illnesses that the study participants had, were gone when they changed their diet.

Since changing my diet a bit, using Stevia in place of sugar, I do have more energy.I also gave up 90% of milk, drinking Almond Milk with no stomach trouble. I actually have something in common with Dave1, no colds.
Food is the cause of illness, with sugar being at the top of the list along with processed foods. More are becoming Diabetics including obese children, with both parents working, good nutrition has been replaced by quick foods. I see Mothers at Starbucks with our wonderful Bakery next door, buying their darlings doughnuts to keep them happy before school.....makes me cringe. Eating right takes a will , but the payoff is amazing.
Excuse me i have to go make my protein smoothie...smiling smiley

Live consciously....
