Sam's Club closing stores suddenly

"Walmart is closing 63 Sam's Club stores across the U.S., the company told Business Insider on Thursday afternoon, after reports of abrupt store closings began to emerge.

Sam's Club has not said how many employees are losing their jobs. Each Sam's Club warehouse employs about 175 people, meaning more than 11,000 people could be impacted.

In some cases, employees were not told their store had closed before showing up to work Thursday. Those employees learned their store would be closing when they found the store's doors locked and a notice announcing the closing, Sam's Club workers told Business Insider. At some stores, employees were turned away by police officers.

The closings came on the same day Walmart announced plans to raise starting hourly wages to $11, expand employee benefits, and offer workers bonuses of up to $1,000.

Ten of the affected stores will be turned into e-commerce distribution centers, and employees of those stores will have the opportunity to reapply for positions at those locations, a Walmart official said."

Really bad way to let people know

. My son, some years back worked for a local burger joint in Connecticut. They had 2 locations close by. He went to work one morning and found they were not only closed up, they'd already stripped the joint. He went to the other location and they told him it was a very sudden decision and that's why he hadn't been told. He was pretty upset. He was only about 17 at the time.

I just heard the news. It's terrible. The location closest to us was making the most money for the county as per reports. I am still wondering why they did that. I also think that they are closing those locations that were within a mile of Walmart.

It's all about the greed. The Walton family doesn't have to work a day in their lives. I work for Sam's Club as my regular job. My location was not selected to close. If their father, Sam Walton was still alive today, he would be ashamed of how his kids are conducting the family's business. There was an article some months ago about the daughter. She owned a horse ranch somewhere in Texas and wanted to sell it. It's been on the market for a while and the daughter expressed disappointment that her ranch wasn't selling because she wanted the asking price. Now, the daughter doesn't have to work a day of her life. She's worth billions. All of the Walton kids are worth billions. You know, when Walmart came to my area, the business motto was supporting american made goods. They've changed that since it was cheaper to get foreign labor to make goods. It's a shame that so many people are out of jobs.

The CEO also cited another factor in the decision to close stores. Some stores are/were situated in areas that did not grow as quickly or as much as anticipated. Presumably, those stores would not attract enough new business to support periodic remodels, etc. They would drain resources.

I feel for the employees who showed up to work and found closed stores. This is just too much, on top of the fact that a job is gone and who-knows-how-many other arrangements must now be made. Hopefully, they have ways to deal and go forward in good ways. Sending this wish to all who need it.

For how long had tptb known that they would close locations? Did they provide any advance notice to anyone, anywhere?

I used to work for a grocery store a while back, owned by Ahold. Last year, they had excellent profits and from what I hear, they are cutting hours while keeping the same workload. It'll be interesting to see what'll happen this year with Ahold since Walmart increased their min wage to $11.

The timing seems typical for Walmart. They made sure to take credit for raising their starting wage along with lying by saying it was tied to the lowering of the corporate tax rate. The reality is the wage increase was slated to happen, necessary for them to keep up with their competitors and the result of the low unemployment rate.

This was a dirty deal for sure! True... Sam would not approve. RIP Sam! Much changed for the WORSE after his death. The way big companies treat their loyal employees is wrong and I do not support them. Just another reason I DO NOT shop at Wal-Mart nor Sam's Club. I feel for the employees! And what about the customers! I was thinking of people who may have prescriptions there or deli/bakery orders for events and such. As an IC, I have stepped foot into two of the Clubs in my area of work to do various projects. Many, many people are affected here. I really feel for all those hourly employees... and this is kind of a slow season for retail anyway. Dirty, dirty deal!

I used to work in their demo dept. before they decided to eliminate all of the demo dept. jobs about 8 years ago. Over 10,000 demo associates lost their jobs.It was big news back then. The corporate's reasoning- needed to cut costs. The majority of the demo associates were older ladies. I think the underlining of the cutbacks were to eliminate the medical insurance since the older ladies would need medical/health insurance and would cost more to cover them through the employer. I had no clue that I would be out of a job. Many of my coworkers did not get another job because they were close to retiring age. By the way, they hired an outside company to do the demos. My coworkers informed me that they did not see any improvement in sales when the new company took over to do the demos. I stayed with the company and got another position within the location.

The article only stated one would be closed in San Antonio. One of the radio DJ's said another would be closing permanently by 1/21. That's odd because it is one of the busiest in the city.

If I renew my membership, it will only be because I can put a family member on it, who doesn't live at the same address.

How they went about it was nasty to say the least.

Did any of the locations have immigration issues? Did any of the locations have serious issues that would concern a health or building inspector?

If you read the article is clear why they are closing the stores.

Three of the locations were in Puerto Rico. Maybe the Waltons consider that a sh--hole country.
