"Ink Cartridges Are A Scam"

This Youtube video does a great job explaining the scam behind ink cartridges. I'm really considering getting a laser printer.

I got an HP printer free from a study I did a couple of months ago. I was astonished to see the prices for the ink cartridges once the initial set was done. It was a $250 printer but I gave it away to a friend. Got a Laser from Amazon and very happy with it.
Wait... you aren't using a laser currently? But seriously, we switched 2 years ago and it was a great decision. My spouse does medical software, tech, repair, etc. for a living and one of the clinics was throwing away two old laser printers that "had issues." He brought them home and made one good machine out of them complete with toner! We haven't replaced a cartridge yet but I have bought some. I usually use eBay and go with 99+ positive feedback, if not 100% before purchasing from someone. I have override on right now for magenta and black and it's been consistently giving me good color prints - just really want to get every last ounce of toner out of there grinning smiley

Amazing switch, though -- particularly if you aren't in need of printing glossy or photographs. I get great color on it. I have an old HP C2025 machine. It's a beast.

It seems I have to replace my $45 Ink Jet cartridges every time I print 10 pages. It is costly. I miss my old personal HP LaserJet. Unfortunately, it was so old that it couldn't handle the amount of data being used on documents nowadays. It was a dinosaur. One of the first HP "personal" printers. I paid something like $850 for it some 25+ years ago.

Shopping up and down the Colorado Rocky Mountain front range.
I purchased a new HP Printer and found a way to get FREE INK with the HP Instant Ink program! Yes, it's legit.
I bought a HP Envy 4520, then I got free ink when I signed up for the instant ink during the printer setup online!

When I signed up, I entered this referral code for ONE more free month!

Let me know if you have any other questions about the printer or program setup! You can sign up for different plans once you set up so you can print more pages! $2.99 and up.

Office Max has laser printers 40% off...starting at 249 00, and going way up with size determining price.

That's overkill in your budget.

$40-100 is all you need for a quality (and even wireless) black and white laser printer with duplex printing. Then $10 for generic toner, which lasts for 2,000+ per toner.

Brother, duplex, wired, which you can typically get for $50 on sale, but $60 right now: [www.officedepot.com]

Dell equivalent as to the one above that was recently $50, but out of stock at the moment: [www.staples.com]

Dell, AIO, wireless, which was recently $70, but currently out of stock: [www.staples.com]

Equivalent Brother AIO, that was recently $90 on sale, but currently at $160: [www.officedepot.com]

I quit buying ink cartridges for my Epson about a year ago. I really don't print stuff that often, and if I do need a physical print, I just print to a pdf and take it to my local FedEx office store and print it there. Just a few pennies a page for black and white.

Investing in even one of the entry laser printers listed above pays for itself. $60/2500 pages = $0.024/page, plus adding convenience into it.

Printer paper is cheap to come by as well, $10 after rebate for a 10 reams (or 5,000 sheets) from Staples.

@Tarantado, Thanks, but no thanks. It would take 20 years to pay for itself for the amount of prints I do a year. I keep all my documents electronic, even the paper ones I receive, I scan and store.

I have a Brothers black and white printer, wireless. The large ink cartridge cost about $50., last over a year and I print lots. I also use both sides of my paper. I just x out the side that is old.
Don't you love how they market that? FREE!!! No, it's not free. After the free trial period, you still pay for your ink, just a little at a time - monthly vs all at once for a cartridge. The convenience of not having to remember to go out and buy ink is nice.

I bought the Epson Ecotank printer a couple of months ago and I'm very happy with it. I had a coupon and bought it when it was on sale on Amazon. I don't even need to buy the ink from them, I can buy it from the guy that sells the ink on Ebay at $10 for two very large, about 6 ounces of black ink and one of each of the three colors. I can imagine that there's enough ink for 3 years and I print a lot for my primary job, my soap company and for the vrbo peeps. For mystery shopping I print zip, zilch, nada unless it's something that needs to be signed at a shop.
That's exactly what I do. The only shop related papers I need to print are for Informa. Everything on my personal end is digital.

The hubby bought the new computer. I have no opinion except that in my experience, it works well for most tasks. For specialty tasks, I lovelovelove the local FedEx/Kinkos. (I cannot mystery shop them anymore because I sometimes print shop materials there. I have to travel miles and miles for that shop.) It's okay. Between computers, I practically lived there for color prints of audit materials. This was far better than using the phone on-site in some locations. It was faster and easier to take notes about each location on the printouts than it was to use the phone's note feature. And, sometimes I was on the phone for the job while taking notes for the job. I love the note app! But it doesn't flow with all tasks. It's all good.

I think that I paid $350 for a laser printer at Staples, yet I've found it to be worthwhile. The cartridges are around the $80 mark, yet this is probably after printing nearly 1,000 pages or more using black ink.
FYI, this is easily the best deal a LASER color printer with duplex printing AND wireless connectivity.

$84.99 with free shipping and generic toner's been priced at $21 at ebay.

Toner: [www.ebay.com]

This is definitely NOT meant to print picture quality prints, but for color prints, this is the best economical option to get, especially for this business.

Thanks DavePi, the video was enlightening and so very real. I had already figured out that those test pages were BS and used too much ink so now I have to bypass the warning every time I print because I refuse to be taken by that aspect of the scam. Grayscale and draft mode still use huge amounts of ink. So that explains why my cheap printer was cheap...it's not!

I paid $50 for a Brother All-In-One from Staples.
I get ink on Amazon for $7 for 2 XL cartirdges. They will last about 6 months each, and I print a lot, especially eBay labels.
